Irish Cath Posted January 13, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2015 Has anyone been ? It seems to be a relatively new stop for cruise ships and there is not a lot of information out there. Thanks
Danish viking Posted January 13, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 13, 2015 It is a cozy and picturesque small fishing village/seaside resort. I have never been to Skagen before but will probably visit it for the first time this summer as I have rented a summer cottage some 70 kilometers away. One of the thing you have to see is the northern tip of denmark called Grenen, here you can stand with one foot in the Northern Sea and with the other in the Baltic Sea (well a part of the Baltic Sea called Kattegat). If you can wait a few days I can post some more suggestions, I can think of alot but I'm not sure of the names or locations so I have to google it first.:D

The Baltic sea (aka Östersjön/Eastern sea) stretches from the southern ends of Öresund & the Danish bälts to Åland. Draw a straight line from the tip of Skagern to the Pater Noster skerries (where the Pater Noster lighthouse is situated), south of it is Kattegatt. Skagerrak is north of the line mentioned above and east of a straight line between Hanstholm in Denmark and Lindesnes i Norway. West of this is the North sea. Danish viking Posted January 14, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 14, 2015 Well the point is that it is another ocean (if that is the correct term) But it doesn't change the fact that you can stand on both the North Sea and Kattegat at once. :D
Danish viking Posted January 14, 2015 #5 Share Posted January 14, 2015 Here is the official website for Skagen. http://www.skagen-tourist.dk/ln-int/toppenafdanmark/tourist
The Viking Posted January 14, 2015 #6 Share Posted January 14, 2015 Skagen is a wonderfull town to relax in but despite nice beaches may be to cold to swim,- even for an Irish. If you can rent bikes I would do that or rent a car and take a daytrip around Vensyssel. Have to admit that if you are unlucky with the weather, there is not much to do. Pleass.check the web for more. If you are into art, this is a good stop for you.
dsrdsrdsr Posted January 14, 2015 #7 Share Posted January 14, 2015 Lots of sand dunes, a buried village with the church tower sticking up above the dunes, and the sea where the waves collide and splash up, making it easy to see the exact line where the seas meet. That was in 1975, anyway, and I doubt it's changed much. I had a very nice day there, though two days would probably be too many.
Irish Cath Posted January 15, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted January 15, 2015 Thank you one and all for the great information. One question - is the town close enough to walk to from the port i.e not more than maybe 30 mins walk ? Catherine :)
Danish viking Posted January 15, 2015 #9 Share Posted January 15, 2015 You are in town when leaving the port. :D https://www.google.dk/maps/place/9990+Skagen/@57.7226391,10.5654895,7555m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x464f44de027e0563:0x2a8401b4c9be16bd A visit to Skagens Museum is worth a visit because of these painters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skagen_Painters
Irish Cath Posted January 15, 2015 Author #10 Share Posted January 15, 2015 Brilliant, thank you again Danish Viking. Now next question - how long does it take to walk to Grenen ? Is there an option to get there by public transport ? Thanks Catherine :)
Danish viking Posted January 15, 2015 #11 Share Posted January 15, 2015 The Sandworm will get you from the Grenen parking lot and out to Grenen but I can´t find info on public transport from Skagen. Its possible to walk but it takes 45 minutes https://www.google.dk/maps/dir/Skagen+st,+Skagen/Kiosken+Grenen,+Fyrvej+38,+9990+Skagen/@57.7298331,10.6014922,15z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x464f44dfe130ce7b:0xae1e56b8d4ca14d0!2m2!1d10.592087!2d57.723911!1m5!1m1!1s0x464f44b5c3213885:0xf97ff98577babd28!2m2!1d10.633471!2d57.738087!3e2 Or else you can rent a bike or take a taxi. http://www.skagentaxa.dk/ http://skagen-cykeludlejning.dk/ http://www.cykelhandler.com/cykeludlejning Perhaps the cruise ship has a shuttle to the Grenen parking lot. CruisesOnMyMind Posted January 17, 2015 #13 Share Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) We are debating getting off our ship in Skagen May 28th to make our May 30th cruise in Copenhagen. We can either stay one night in Skagen or 2 nights in Copenhagen if a Thursday or Friday make a difference. I have researched this and it seems trains do this route, but have no luck when actually trying to put it in a mock booking. Any suggestions or links that allow this route? We are supposed to be flying out of Gatwick and landing in Copehagen May 30th at 2:35pm. Our ship leaves at 4:30 and I am afraid we might not make it as I am now hearing traffic can be horrendous going to the Oceankaj port and it is a 30 min drive. Edited to say we wouldn't be opposed to a ferry either which I am just researching. Thank you for all your help. Desdichado62 Posted January 18, 2015 #16 Share Posted January 18, 2015 Donna's mom & dad. Yeah that is right to some extent. West/south of Hanstaholm is the North sea, east/south of the Skagen tip is Kattegatt and the area in-between is Skagerrak. Cato : [/size] This is interesting. When you state your mom is from Marie Magdalene, I presume it is Ryomgård on Djursland. The church there is named Marie Magdalene. I grew in central Jylland where my dad was a minister with 3 churches. When I went to Gyminasiet, he let me investigate inquiries primarily from Danes in North America. It was very interesting to through these huge books with all births, baptism, marriages and death going back a few hundred years. The local ministers in the Lutheran church kept all such information.
