Chair Hogs Rule

wow ! Here is a idea why don't you wait outside or wherever in a chair, have your sister and sister-in-law go into the buffet find a table one if them sits down and the other comes and gets you ? That way you are not taking someones table, the buffet is not the pool people don't reserve tables in the buffet, the chances that someone is chair hogging at the buffet are probably less than 1%

That was my point... It's a buffet meaning you have to get up and serve yourself and that the table may be momentarily unattended. Your belongings being there indicate that it's in use. First come, first served. If people are going to be that manic about seating in the buffet that they feel it's OK to disrupt other's meals by moving their things, they should skip the buffet all together and go to the main dining room to get table service.

Also, while I sympathize with an earlier poster's comment about having trouble getting around and needing to be seated relatively quickly as standing is an issue, I would concur with another poster in suggesting that they solicit help from the buffet staff in locating a place to sit instead of moving other people's things.

It's rude and inconsiderate to take someone's table and move their stuff while they're still dining in the buffet... and it should not be necessary (even though it seems advisable based on some of the more selfish comments here) to leave someone to guard the table for the few minutes all the people at your table get up to serve themselves.

I was up on deck the Epic last week getting coffee at 6:00 a.m. When I saw a couple putting the deck chairs out themselves before the staff had even started to prepare the deck.

Put up 10 chairs, left towels , books, clothes on them. Then left. I went to bfast came back about 8:00 a.m. And you guessed it none of their group was there yet!

Unfortunately we live in a ME first society, where common sense is a thing of the past.

There are also designated tables for people with handicaps.

It always seems like people (who aren't handicapped) would sit there regardless. I have seen it many times but I never sit there even if I can't find any seats.

I also find moving someone else's stuff (when they could just be in line getting more food) to be beyond rude. When I am eating by myself, my style is just to get food first and then find table. When I am finished and want more food, I get more food and either go back to my previous table or go to another table.

I am a full time Wheelchair user

I cruise with my wife, we go thru the buffet seeing what is available, then we go and find a table and I park there guarding the table until she comes back

Yes there are usually 2-3 tables with signs indicating that they are for handicapped people, most of the time they are filled with non HC people

On the last cruise they did have staff telling people to move.

And more than once, someone just took off the sign and threw it in the corner

I will not confront someone I will find another table, but my wife will express her opinion

That's just not right. And honestly, it makes me sick to think that some people have such disregard for everyone else.

Just off BA, this is what was in the Daily. ImageUploadedByForums1422106593.258843.jpg.c93d150ed0f2f65fb22be9e5ed6868a4.jpg

I was on BA for 12 days and never went to the pool (DH isn't a huge fan). But I will say that had I gone to the pool, I probably would have, throughout the day, thrown my towel down and gone to the buffet or back to my room or whatever for an hour. I read that policy and think I can leave my lounger for 60 minutes. Not 15 minutes or 30 minutes but I can reasonably get up and leave my chair for 60 minutes without someone else taking it. After 60 minutes, if I don't get back to my chair it is reasonable to think my stuff will get moved. If it doesn't get moved - bonus! That probably makes me a chair hog wannabe...I'm good with that label.

I was on an RCI cruise last March...they have a similar policy. I got up at 7am, hogged two chairs with magazines and such for my friend and I and then went for breakfast. I think we were back at the pool at 9am...that definitely makes me an official chair hog....and again, I'm good...Call me what you want. I wanted a chair at the pool for the day. We used the two chairs all day. Outside of my morning indiscretion, we never left....ohhh, except for lunch at the buffet...and being in the pool....and going to the bathroom. How long does one have to SIT in the chair before they get up again, exactly? If you are in the pool and can SEE your chair, is it ok? Maybe my friend and I need to trade off going in the pool so she can hold my chair and I can hold hers...

I definitely think I can leave something on a table in the buffet, get food and come pack and believe my stuff should still be there. Personally, if I see some someone with a disability sitting there I'll happily go find another table. I'd ask to join them if the place is packed...

I went to the spa and fell asleep on the heated loungers. I think that policy says 30 minutes. Definitely chair hog. I'm good with that.

I don't have kids so you can't say I'm a bad parent. But I do have a dog that barks at the UPS Lady...maybe bad dog parent? I'm good with that, too.

Label away, peeps.

How come chair hogs never participate here at Cruise Critic?

They're here, and they're reading this thread. While they may be jerks, I'm sure most are smart enough to realize they would take a serious cyber beating if they tried to justify their rude behavior. I've actually seen a couple try and defend themselves before. They don't stay in the thread long.

There are people who get irritated any time they see an unattended lounge chair with someone's belongings even when they have no idea how long it's been empty. That's their own problem. You are perfectly fine to leave it for an hour, as per the written rules. We, too, will get up from our loungers to eat breakfast, and then again lunch. There is nothing wrong with that.

Personally, I like to lounge by the pool in the early morning, reading and enjoying the calmness of the deck at that hour. If I were to get there at 7, like I usually do, and can't find a chair because someone who isn't going to be around until after 9 has taken it, you can see why I might be a little irritated. However, that has never been an issue because there are plenty of open spaces at that hour.

As someone said earlier, people who show up at 11 expecting a prime location are just being idiots. If they want a good spot, they need to make some sacrifices and get out there earlier -- with their asses in chairs, and not just to plop down a towel for several hours.

I was sitting by the pool a few months ago on the getaway and an older guy walked by a Row of chairs with towels and books on them and started spitting on them as he walked by.

The people next to us looked at us with horror, then the oh my god started and we all started laughing.

I'm not going anywhere with a timer. If I see an unattended chair for several minutes....and no other chairs around....I move the stuff and sit.

If the person comes back in a few minutes and starts crying, I give him his chair back.

I have 65 years experience on the NYC subway....I know how to share space.

Now...in the casino....someone sitting and not playing....I just say "Excuse me, if you're not playing I'd like to lose MY money here." Sometimes, if someone is just keeping a player company, I get a huffy stare...but they move. And I generally lose my money so fast....I give "the throne" right back.

Buffet hoggery....I ask people if we can join them when seats are available at a table...and I don't see other alternatives. I don't think I'd move things.

Think of all these hog situations as an opportunity to make new friends.

In either of those situations, the people might have simply gone to use the bathroom. Who is the a$$hole in those situations?

I don't know, but people should think twice before leaving their stuff sitting around on chairs others may want to use. There are a lot of cooky people out there.

Disgusting sitting in someone else's spit.

It's because of people like this that either my husband or I will stay with our stuff, while the other gets lunch or whatever.

I agree! We are a family of 7, but usually only grab 3 chairs, because we come and go. Most of the time, at least one of us would be there. I would be angry if we decided to splash in the pool for 15 or so minutes ago, and come back to others in our chairs. Plus, we use the spot so that the kids know where we are, and they know that if we aren't in the chairs, we will be back shortly.

There's a huge difference between leaving your stuff on chairs, and leaving for 1+ hours, than running to the bathroom, or to cool off in the pool. I've found that there are always chairs available, but if you NEED to be in a certain spot, be there early.

Heck, what if a parent and young children wanted to swim together? Should the parent let the kids swim unsupervised, because she doesn't want to lose the chair?

So...what's the problem? You go back to the chair...see someone sitting there...and say "Oh...I was there. Those are my things." And the "chair snatcher" says..."Ok...I didn't think anyone was using it"....and moves on.

No need for either party to get huffy or confrontational.

Yes, I could. However, my children wouldn't be so bold. If there aren't any available chairs, just keep looking. If you really want a particular spot, wait and see if they've been abandoned, instead of moving the property of the occupant who might've just need a cold drink, or a bathroom break. I dislike chair hogs too, but spent punish others who have done nothing wrong.

I'm from the land of the NJ Housewives- people here CAN be crazy, so I'm wary of confrontation with strangers.

LOL

Maybe the ship put " Be Back in XX minute" timers on chairs. How should I know if you're in the pool, the bathroom, the buffet, taking a nap, taking a stroll...or whatever?

All I know is there is a chair that isn't being presently occupied...and hasn't been for "a while".

And, why do you feel you'd have to "confront me" anyway? A pleasant..."oh, I was here"....is all that's necessary.

Maybe our definitions of confrontation are different. This is not confrontation....it's communicating.

As to the kids...take a minute and walk them back to the chairs.

orrrrrrr....take a minute and find a chair that doesn't have anything on it. Sometimes that means in a not prime location. While I didn't use the pool on the BA this past cruise, I certainly walked around it enough...and even on sea days where it was crazy busy during prime pool hours, I looked around to see if I could find open chairs (curiosity since it's always a hot topic here) and there were always some within easy distance to the pool.

Around here, folks don't take kindly with people taking up their claimed real estate (I've seen fights break out when someone plops their stuff too close to someone else's beach real estate down the shore). Just because you say you will gladly move, most would see your behavior as rude.

As for the kids, they go off on their own. They know they can always find us at our chairs, and if we are not there, we will be back shortly. When we are on vacation, and/or at the beach, we have a spot (like most people traveling together). I don't think we've ever been away from our stuff for more than 20 minutes.

As someone who has yet to cruise, this seems like a fairly simple concept to me. If you see belongings on a chair in a spot where you would like to park yourself, keep looking in that general area for an empty chair. Keep an eye on the prime spaces, and when someone opens up, or those belongings don't move for an hour, then that should be enough to justify moving them, and sitting in those chairs.

I don't think it's okay to just walk up and move them right away, because, as stated previously, you don't know if someone went to the pool for a few, or to use the restroom, or to grab a drink.

Maybe it's just me, but this seems rather straight forward.

And as someone with only 3 cruises under my belt, I couldn't agree more! It's a good time. Ignore the strong opinions....cruisers are generally a fairly nice group once on board ;)
