son3cruisers Posted January 18, 2016 Author #2226 Share Posted January 18, 2016 Just wanted to report back on my experience. We just got off Freedom today. We had OBC and a cash account. We withdrew from the casino on Day 2 with no issues. Initially they said it would be a 5 percent charge but once they saw it was cash account they said no charge. They said the withdrawl limit is 500 per day per stateroom and you could only withdraw until your account was in the negative 500 dollars before adding more cash to your account. All in all a very easy and pain free experience. We still had $41 remaining credit in our account at the end of the cruise and that was refunded in cash at Guest Services on Day 7. Russ Lomas Posted January 18, 2016 #2228 Share Posted January 18, 2016 We got a great rate on the liberty a few months ago for this summer. It ended up being $2745 CAD for 5 of us in the Promenade Family Stateroom ($549pp). We also got a steal of a deal flying out of BOS. Unfortunately I did not buy any OBC before the 10% went away, but we still got a great deal. I think I booked under the 30% off sale. That is a great deal. I booked our family in a panoramic family oceanview for 6 day sailing in March 2017. We booked back in May 2015 when RCCL was offering 50% off the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the cabin. I asked about the rate for the 5th and 6th were half off as well. We are paying about $650 each for that trip. Like others have said though, if the Canadian dollar is still in the toilet and RCCL is not offering a good deal with OBC like they were up until 2 weeks ago, it will have a significant impact on how much we spend onboard the ship that trip. We bought OBC for the 2016 cruise but not for the 2107 cruise.
Tamaracklady Posted January 18, 2016 #2229 Share Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) +1. Haha. Well until they put a Timmies on board we're stuck with Fivebucks. Maybe we should lobby RCL to get one aboard and let us pay in CAD$! Edited January 18, 2016 by Tamaracklady

I'm not a Starbuck's fan... Timmies for me! ;) Anyone know if they take Canadian Starbucks cards on the Anthem? Probably a long shot for anyone actually having tried it but thought I'd ask anyway! :) Is there even a Starbucks kiosk on the Anthem?! Or just the Promande Cafe serving Starbucks (or is it Seattles Best?). So confused with offerings amongst the different ships!

Only Oasis class has the dedicated Starbucks. Edited January 18, 2016 by Ourusualbeach
davidsmum Posted January 18, 2016 #2232 Share Posted January 18, 2016 i wonder if they would accept a Canadian one? We were able to use our SB gold cards on Oasis, we earned stars but could not redeem them.
Canadian Tyler Posted January 18, 2016 #2233 Share Posted January 18, 2016 Were the beds as bad as many people have reported on here - rock hard since being replaced? Sorry, just realized I didn't reply to this part. We found the bed to be bearable. Ours already had a foam topper on it, and it was firm but not uncomfortable. monctonguy Posted January 18, 2016 #2234 Share Posted January 18, 2016 It will take them awhile to notice a decrease from Canadians onboard not spending as much as a result of the OBC going up as many of us bought in advance at the good rate. That being said, I have notice "resident special rates" on the Canadian site now. SO it looks like they maybe trying to offer a little something...rates were pretty good in CAD actually....so if the OBC exchange is terrible, lowering rates a little may help to offset that. dpostman Posted January 18, 2016 #2235 Share Posted January 18, 2016 I'm not sure how those "Special Rates" are supposed to apply, but I just tried to mock rebook our Anthem cruise I booked last November. For 2 balcony staterooms, today's price was give or take $1300 more, and only $200 per room of OBC, when $300 was the norm before, plus I got $400 OBC per room cause I booked on Cyber Monday. dp
BenandJerry Posted January 18, 2016 #2236 Share Posted January 18, 2016 Just called RCI about purchasing an OBC. Their rate is 1.40 which is better than the bank rate, but unfortunately we booked through a US travel agent, so our reservations are in US funds. We would therefore have to purchase an OBC in US funds and our credit card company would be the ones determining the exchange rate. Complicated. In our case, I think the best idea would be to run off to the bank and buy US $ today at 1.45 and use that cash to pay our on board account at the end of the cruise. Who knows what the rate of exchange will be in mid February.

Newbcruiser1 Posted January 19, 2016 #2242 Share Posted January 19, 2016 What a great deal on that Liberty cruise! Too bad I already booked the Anthem for the week before! I did wonder though - did everyone who booked it manage to find reasonable airfare? All I found was $800 from Toronto to Houston... And no direct flights. Although I suppose it would still be a decent deal in the context of the fabulous cruise deal!

Rivergal1 Posted January 19, 2016 #2244 Share Posted January 19, 2016 So totally off topic.. sorry.. but can we fly from Canada into the US with wine? We have 2 lovely bottles of wine picked out to take on our cruise with us, but it just occurred to me that we may not be able to transport them to the boat? Im not worried about breakage, just the legalities. Im assuming we can as you can bring wine from the US back to Canada. Anyone??

Yes, limit of 1 L per person, but in checked baggage due to the infamous TSA liquids/gels/aerosols rules (if you bring more than 1 L/person, you'll be subject to their import duties and/or federal excise taxes). https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/190/~/bringing-alcohol-%28including-homemade-wine%29-to-the-u.s.-for-personal-use

Misty_Que Posted January 19, 2016 #2247 Share Posted January 19, 2016 So if I am understanding this correctly, if we have a credit card tied to our sea pass and go to the casino to take out money or voucher from our OBC, we will get charged 5%? But if we just have a cash account, we won't get charged the 5%? Now can we change from a cash account and add a credit card sometime during the cruise or pay off our bill with a credit card at the end? So we are taking our chances and flying standby the day before. $455 total for my husband and I. I will be watching the seats pretty closely tho. If something chances we will be flying out of Detroit.
skatie Posted January 19, 2016 #2250 Share Posted January 19, 2016 (edited) I asked my travel agent to inquire with RCI about prepaying our tips in Canadian and they told her that it would be $79.50 per Person for our five day trip but I have to pay immediately when I make that decision. If I wait until on board it is $12.95 USD per person which works out to $92 Canadian with a $1.43 exchange rate. I'm going to pay in Canadian before leaving!
