RCI knew for 9+ months before the Quantum was finished that she will be home ported in Shanghai yet they didn't make alterations for the Asian market or send it there directly.
Geoff and Springaussie,

I noticed that the Sydney ports was updated 25 February and it is still showing the Celebrity Solstice being in Sydney when according to Celebrity website she is in Singapore drydock. I know I have mentioned this before, but am now wondering if this could be a placement for another RCCL ship, as the Celebrity has released there schedules. Also Springaussie, the March entry with Explorer and Azamara Quest still showing.
Yes, I believe those Solstice bookings are a decoy for another ship, particularly since they are still there since Celebrity released the actual itineraries to and from Singapore in October 2016.
I've also mentioned an excess of bookings for Explorer and Voyager at Sydney OPT through the 2016/2017 season, also possible decoys for another ship.
If Harmony is going to sail from Barcelona I do hope there is a non EU port included in her itineraries so that we won't have to pay the spanish tax.
I don't see that happening. It will probably do similar ports as the Allure this year. Assuming it will be doing 7 night cruises, it's pretty difficult to get all the way from Barcelona to a non EU port.
With the amount of new ships heading to Florida November 2016 maybe Royal could just send Harmony to Singapore for the higher cruise fares and the mighty gambling $$$$.

Agreed - the Caribbean cruise market is saturated with capacity, as evidenced by the fares and level of promotional activity. I can understand Royal deploying their latest and greatest to Florida, so its probably more likely that an earlier Oasis class moves to Asia rather than Harmony.

Sorry, but I disagree (and not because of US bias). Royal needs a new build in Florida, they haven't had one there since 2010. And the competition have been pumping new ships in the market lately also.

Plus, don't you think Royal pissed off enough people from the US when they redeployed Quantum. As Geoff stated, I'd be more prone to believe that they will send one of the original two Oasis class ships.

Ps.. Those watersides just scream Florida and the Caribbean! Edited by OfTheSeasCruiser

I had posted the planned itinerary a few months ago and they only replace one port as it looks now.

Allure / Oasis 3 is booked from Barcelona from Sunday 1 May, 2016 for 7 day cruises calling at

Sunday Barcelona

Monday Palma de Mallorca

Tuesday Marseille

Wednesday Livorno

Thursday Civitavecchia (Rome)

Friday Naples

Saturday at sea

Sunday Barcelona

La Spezia is replaced by Livorno for 2016 season for Allure / Oasis 3

A Transatlantic would leave Barcelona on Sunday the 23rd October 2016

23 Oct Barcelona

24 Oct Palma de Mallorca

25 Oct Cartagena, Spain

26 Oct Gibraltar

27 - ? TBA

May be a 14 night to FLL to put it on Allure rotation or other TBA.

She now appears to enter the MED via Malaga.

I agree with you. With NCL pumping new ships into Miami (Getaway and, later this year, Escape), and Carnival deploying its new Vista to Miami, RCI really needs to bring some new hardware to South Florida or they risk losing business from curious customers looking to try something different.

Also, I don't think the earlier poster's point about Caribbean promotional activity is persuasive. Oasis and Allure have sailed at a premium for as long as they've been sailing, and a new Oasis Class ship will command an even greater premium.

When you see how terrifically they handle Oasis class ships at Spanish ports, you sure do not need to be concerned about your tax money not being put to great use at least. That infrastructure costs.

I am in Madrid now and just had thousands of students pass under my terrace protesting all the planned austerity measures against education, so I can tell you Spain sure needs these revenue sources if that makes the pain of paying that small tax a little better.

Why is the Japanese flag below the blue waterslides?

lol. That was actually a red circle against a beige background which seemed to be white in your case. Part of the exterior paint along that area. Not a Japanese flag (look on the right of the door for more patterns). :D

I agree with you that RCI need to protect home port market share at the same time as perusing global expansion.

Florida is not just an American embarkation port but a global destination. With Aida moving into Tampa along with the new NCL and Carnival ships soon to be followed by 4 MSC and one Costa Megaship, mean that RCI need to proceed very strategically.

I had answered your post last night, but see the response did not post. Basically I think with all the Florida infrastructure investments with the tunnel at the Port of Miami and the new roadways going in around PE and FLL along with the new T1 at PC, RCI have no choice but to continue along with enhance their position in Florida.

Why is the Japanese flag below the blue waterslides?

I was going to say that a red circle might not really indicate an Asian deployment, but then as well thought of the bad experience Japanese, Mitsubishi just had building the new German, Aida, Carnival Corp ships for deployment in Europe.

It is almost funny how global the marketplace has gotten. The reason they had to build in Japan is that shipyards in Europe took too many orders building ships to be deployed to Asia for Star among others.

Quantum is getting $80,000,000 worth of renovations done on it's way over to China... so this is significant.

Do you have a source for that information?

That additional 8% to the total cost of the vessel just to send it to Asia for an unknown period of time does not seem very wise.

The per berth cost was already around $247000, which was already a bit high for a 3 ship order.

It was interesting to sail on the Norwegian Spirit just prior to her dry-dock and see how she was designed for the Asian market for Star. She was already a much more traditional ship than Oasis or Quantum class RCI ships. Having sailed on Quantum, I do not see that level of investment being needed for deployment to Asia, but it would be interesting to know what is included.

Thanks god I'm not alone to think that $80m is way to high!

I think the 17 ship 'Royal Advantage' 'Now our best ship is every ship' and Oasis class upgrades across the fleet were only budgeted at a total cost of $350,000,000 or about $7000 per berth. Taking into account that Quantum staterooms will need no renovation and most public areas will not need adaption, I would think that even $8,000,000 or about $1900 per berth might be reasonable adding less than 0.8% to the total cost of Q.

If its costing so much just to renovate quantum, why didnt they just send anthem instead and modify her design since she was still being built then and her sail date would still be in time for her to come to Asia based on the current quantum schedule...

I asked this same question and did not get a good response. They mentioned could not modify this late in the game. I didn't buy this.

USD 80 Million for adjusting Quantum to the Asian market is impossible. What for changes can be done; Adding some more Luxury Brand flagship stores / products, squishing in more slot machines and tables to the casino, adjusting dynamic dining, removing the majority of the outdoor deck chairs (Chinese don't like sun), adding new shows and changing the signage to both English and Chinese definitely no, someone has been mistaken by 2 or 3 too many zeros.
