what to look for?

We will be driving to port. We have a long drive @ 18 hours. Many of the plans say only for coverage outside of United states. So am I right to assume if something happens on the way to port nothing would be covered? Am I going to find a plan that will cover us from leaving our house till we get home?

Please call Steve at

TripInsuranceStore.com

(Don't just read the plan summaries on his website; the "details" are critical.)

Discuss you complete trip, and what concerns you have, such as trip cancellation, medical/medevac, trip interruption, etc.

Especially important for medical coverage is whether you want a waiver for pre-existing condition exclusions (essential for us and many others), or whether medical coverage is primary or secondary.

They'll explain it all.

No plan we've had or looked at was for outside of the USA only, although apparently there are some.

What matters is that *your* trip is covered fully.

Anyone at his office can also help you.

Quality policies, what Steve sells, cover you from the moment you walk out your door. However, be certain to look at the specific, named coverages and understand what trip policies do and do not cover. This is where your insurance broker, again like Steve, should be of help and not just be an online sales click of the button.

If you got sick on your 18 hour drive, that is a covered event under most policies. A car accident on the way to the port would likely be covered for cruise cancellation by a quality policy (the accident itself would fall under your auto policy), but not by all trip policies. Being delayed by bad weather often would not be covered under trip delay as your car is not a Common Carrier, but it could be covered under an Inclement Weather provision. It pays to learn to read these policies and know what you are purchasing.

And, for goodness sakes, purchase one of the most effective and least costly "insurance policies" of all!

It's a cheap hotel room near the port to stay at the night before the cruise. Never. Ever. Plan to arrive in port the day you are supposed to leave.

Just curious, if you have an 18 hour drive, why not fly? That's roughly 1800 miles R/T... you need some pretty darn expensive plane tickets to make that worth the cost.
