We have been many times before so will tske the ship's shuttle into Rome. We would like to visit the Catacombs but any walking tours are at 2.30pm too late for us. Can we go in the morning by ourselves and how do we get there?

There are several different catacomb sites in Rome. The most known and visited are the three on Via Appia Antica, San Sebastiano, Domitilla, and San Callisto.

You can easily get there on your own from the historic center of Rome by bus. The #118 route is here: http://viaggiacon.atac.roma.it/?service=calcolapercorso&da=via%20conciliazione&dac=roma&a=via%20appia%20antica,%20136&aac=roma&data=8/2/2015&ora=13:58&mezzo=1&tipo=1#

The easiest places to get this bus are either the Circo Massimo metro station or the Ostiense train station.

Note that San Callisto is closed on Wednesdays: http://www.catacombe.roma.it/en/index.php

San Sebastiano is closed on Sundays: http://www.catacombe.org/uk_info.html

Domitilla is slightly closer in to the city and it is closed on Tuesdays: http://www.domitilla.info/docs/brochures/brochen.pdf

Rather than take the ship's shuttle, it may be easier to take the train from Civitavecchia toward Rome, then alight at the Ostiense station and get the 118 bus to the catacombs.

With the temporary/new port entrance, it's a bit more hassle to get to the train in Civitavecchia, but it's easier on the other end (in Rome).

On the other hand, if you take the ship shuttle, you should find out where it drops you so you can plan how best to get to one of the points mentioned by eurocruiser.

When open, the catacombs offer tours on a fairly regular basis throughout the day, though you may have to wait a bit for the next English tour.

I'm not sure you're even allowed to visit without a tour, I don't think you can just wander about on your own (but I'm not certain on this point).

You are correct - one is not allowed to wander about on one's own. In any event, I certainly would not want to - it would be horrific to get lost in the catacombs.
