SASSYMI2 Posted February 9, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2015 Has anyone had success communicating with walkie talkies while onboard a Holland America ship in the Carribean?

Rare kazu Posted February 9, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 9, 2015 they make a lot of noise - especially the person yelling "can you hear me? can you hear me? can you hear me?" We just agree to meet at x spot or leave a note in the cabin for the other. You also have voice mail on your phone. From what I have seen, most people do not use them successfully

SASSYMI2 Posted February 9, 2015 Author #6 Share Posted February 9, 2015 Thanks to all for your timely replies and expertise. I guess I will leave the walkie talkies at home and maybe resort to cell phone texting???????
HealthyTouch101 Posted February 9, 2015 #7 Share Posted February 9, 2015 You will likely pay a fortune for cell phone texting, if you even can (just where will the cell towers be?). You are never far from the room. We often leave notes there, or simply say the two places we will likely be....for instance, I will be on the left side of the Lido drinking coffee if it is breakfast time and you sleep in, or in the Crow's Nest reading in afternoon after trivia, or if my swimsuit is gone, in the thermal pool. Plus, use the phone in your room to call one another to check in or to leave messages.
SASSYMI2 Posted February 9, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted February 9, 2015 I had forgotten about the cabin phone. Anyone know if Hal ships have courtesy phones near the lido and/or other decks or destinations (gym, Crows Nest, etc)? you will likely pay a fortune for cell phone texting, if you even can (just where will the cell towers be?). Rare kazu Posted February 9, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 9, 2015 I had forgotten about the cabin phone. Anyone know if Hal ships have courtesy phones near the lido and/or other decks or destinations (gym, Crows Nest, etc)? there are house phones near all the elevators and in other spots. You can use those to leave a voice mail in your cabin if no one is there. Easy.
jmps Posted February 9, 2015 #10 Share Posted February 9, 2015 (edited) When our kids were teens we used them. They worked well to keep track of them. Earlier than that and they were in the kids clubs or with us so we didn't need them. The issue with radios is not the radios themselves but how some people use them. If you use them properly they don't have to be annoying. Just because others misuse them doesn't mean you shouldn't use them. For most other uses leaving voicemail works well on the ship. Cell phone texting would be a very expensive substitute. The main other use by us was actually off ship. However, the issue there is the frequencies are not usable in most foreign countries and if you are in the US you can now just use a cell phone most of the time. We don't take them anymore for that reason. Edited February 9, 2015 by jmps
