currency for south pacific cruise???

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I am going on my first cruise next month (RCI Rhapsody of the Seas) to the south pacific.

Do I need to organise some local currency for spend during shore excursions etc. and if so what do I need??

We are stopping at Lifou, Loyalty Island; Nouméa, New Caledonia; Mystery Island, Vanuatu; Isle of Pines, New Caledonia

Thanks :)

You can get away with just having AUD for Lifou, and Noumea depending on what you plan to do. Not sure about the other two but since they are very small islands I suspect they'll be like Lifou and accept AUD.

In Noumea there is a Casino supermarket diagonally across from the ferry building where the HoHo bus leaves from. There is an ATM there if you want to get local currency. The HoHo bus sales desk accepts AUD, as does the cafe next to it. However you may need to use local currency or a credit card at shops.

Sounds like we're on the same cruise as you. Departing March 20th? Have you joined the roll call http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2001158 and signed up for the Meet and Mingle?

Mystery Island isn't settled, so there isn't a lot of shopping, just what the locals have brought across with them.

Isle of Pines doesn't have a lot locally either, just a few souvenir stalls of different sorts and a few local tours. As said, AUD is fine, but you probably won't need much. (And if you want souvenirs/gifts, as they're presumably your last stops on the cruise, don't wait until then if you see something suitable earlier.)

Depending on what you want to buy, Aussie dollars should be fine. We did those same stops last year and all the tour vendors at the docks and market stalls had everything in dollars. We had got some Vatu and Francs just in case but I wouldn't worry next time. It's only if you were planning on buying things while out and about in Noumea, as it's a city it's only the cruise specific things that will take AU dollars for the convenience of the tourists, if you want to get a drink or something while wandering around you'll need francs. You other ports will all be set up for cruise passengers for the day.
