Rare Cruise Raider Posted February 22, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2015 We are debating on taking our own wine onboard vs purchasing a wine package -- any answers here might help us make our decision easier. 1) For the 10 night cruises on the STAR, are they offering the wine packages? 2) If so, does anyone have the current costs of the 7, 10 and 12 bottle packages and the per bottle price limits within each package? I saw it somewhere on this site and haven't been able to find it again.....so any help would be most appreciated? We would probably only be interested in the 7 bottle package for this length of a cruise but might go in on a 12 bottle package with another couple. I do understand they would have to charge it to one card and we'd split it up from there. 3) Are there any decent wines available in the lower priced package or is it worth it to purchase the higher priced package right off the bat? ie: decent being in the range of a KJ Chardonnay or a Clos du Bois Cabernet 4) If you get the lower priced package and purchase a bottle over the limit, do you pay the full price for the bottle of wine or just the difference? 5) Also, do they still have the happy hour in the wheelhouse bar at 3 PM on the Star? If they are not offering these packages consistently, we would just prefer to pack our own and pay the corkage for any bottles over the first 2 that we can enjoy in our cabin. thanks in advance for any and all help

partybarbie Posted February 23, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2015 And I believe this is the other post that you were looking for. Wine packages are not shown on their website & here's the info for when wine packages are available (generally longer than 7 day cruises but haven't sailed the Diamond in Asia). Note: A 15% gratuity is added to all package prices (like any other bar purchase). Silver Package (wines up to $29 per bottle list price) 7 bottles -- $161 (average of $23 per bottle) 10 bottles -- $210 (average of $21 per bottle) 12 bottles -- $240 (average of $20 per bottle) Gold Package (wines up to $45 per bottle list price) 7 bottles -- $217 (average of $31 per bottle) 10 bottles -- $290 (average of $29 per bottle) 12 bottles -- $336 (average of $28 per bottle) You get a punch card which can be used at any of the dining locations. You may choose any wine on on the regular dining room wine menu. If you want to buy a wine that costs more than what the package covers, you just pay the difference. For example, if you have a Gold package and buy a wine that costs $46, the charge for $46 will appear on your stateroom account, followed by a $45 credit. You can select any wine up to $29. I don't remember the Gold package costs because I have only purchased the Silver package. 3) Make your own decision from the wine list. 4) You just pay the difference. Actually you are charged for the bottle of wine without gratuity added and then credited $29. 5) Don't know about the Star but on the Crown two weeks ago there was a Happy Hour from 3:00-4:00 in the Wheelhouse Bar and later from 11:00-12:00 in Skywalkers. The Crown's Wheelhouse Bar is much larger than the Star's. I hope they use a different venue on the Star because the Wheelhouse was totally full around 3:30 on the Crown. Rare oskidunker Posted February 23, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2015 I find the winepackage not worth the hassle. They guve you a paper card. If you lose the card you are out of luck. I am rolling on a wine carrier for the Star 4/19 out of San francisco. But i live 20 minutes from the port
lvmy2boys Posted February 23, 2015 #6 Share Posted February 23, 2015 We were on the Star last week. The wine package is available and we briefly considered it but they could not guarantee the wines that were listed were in stock. So we had the chance of buying the package with certain wines in mind but they were possibly not available. There was a happy hour everyday from 3 - 4, but not always in the Wheelhouse. It was always listed in the patter where happy hour would be that day.

I hope they have something available. While we live close to the pier, we plan on packing light as there has been some reported problems with the porters and we may just take the BART train and walk the rest of the way. So, a package vs paying the corkage might take us to a break even point ... or a little less. We were on the Crown in December and you are correct....it was so crowded shortly after it opened. Fun but crowded.
