mrschipsfc Posted March 6, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 6, 2015 I haven't seen this yet, traveling to Alaska, what side of the ship gives you the best viewing while sailing?
roger001 Posted March 6, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 6, 2015 We've cruised Alaska twice. I don't think one side is better than the other. Going up and back there will be plenty to see from either side.
Guindalf Posted March 6, 2015 #3 Share Posted March 6, 2015 There isn't a 'best side'. They are both good as you're mostly sailing up and down the inside passage and there's land on either side!
don't-use-real-name Posted March 6, 2015 #4 Share Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) Traditionally NORTH BOUND STARBOARD - - - & - - -SOUTH BOUND PORT. For trips originating and ending same port (circle trip) doesn't make too much difference. In the INSIDE Passage land will be visible on both sides - favoring the continent side for seeing larger land mass and lesser to the Ocean (Vancouver Island) side. When the ships visit the Glaciers at first it will be the bow and then with most of the cruise lines the Captain will turn the ship 360 degrees to afford everyone with a view from almost every angle following by the stern in departing. If you are in an Inside cabin or an Obstructed view Cabin you will of course find your best view topside or on a Promenade Deck. Sitka and Icy Point Straight are tendering ports - no advantage here. At other ports the ships design may play into which side faces port and what gangway is used. And of course YMMV ! calmpets Posted March 6, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 6, 2015 Whichever side of the ship I wasn't on, tended to get all the wildlife sightings. It was the running joke by the end of the cruise, of how I went to Alaska and saw absolutely no wildlife. :D
amarvel Posted March 6, 2015 #6 Share Posted March 6, 2015 I like starboard. Depends a little bit on your itinerary but for the jewel I definitely like starboard better. And if you're going only northbound you want starboard and if you're only going south bound you'd want port. But you really can't go wrong. fishin' musician Posted March 6, 2015 #7 Share Posted March 6, 2015 Neither side; if you can swing it go for a forward or aft facing balcony. Had an aft on the Sun last summer and could see about 200 degrees.
