People are wanting to disembark and get refunds on Liberty of the Seas; can they?!

Recommended Posts

Guess it's so common now it doesn't even make the news.... Or I just missed it. Sad.

There were several news articles about it. There is also a long thread on cruise critic, but the website was acting up so I couldn't paste the link to it.

It has happened a lot lately. quite sad.

A repair of a hull fitting (pipe between the hull and first valve) is not an altogether uncommon repair, though a bit uncommon in a ship of Liberty's age. Usually, there was a flaw in the welding from new construction, that corroded in the sea water and caused a small leak. The crew have "damage control" clamps to clamp over the pipe and stop the leak, and then a diver will need to weld from the outside and follow with a weld on the inside. Sea water piping is the Achilles heel of ships' engineering systems. Use of better materials and limiting sea water use in the engine room are all standard practice, but sea water will always win out over human engineering if there is one small error.

Twice on the Liberty, we had issues.

Once, we had to miss a port due to a person (a poster here, in fact) requiring an emergency evacuation. The most recent one, we were a good hour out of the port when we went back- which effectively delayed the sailing until about 9pm (same thing this time). Again, a health emergency.

The first time, we got our port fees back, the second nothing.

But our feeling both times were- I'm very thankful that RCI thinks that a human's health is that important. It could be me, too. Didn't really need anything back for it.

In this case, I'd be far happier that they want the fix to be RIGHT vs. fast.

The complaining is why we are very selective in who we hang our with on board.

  • 11 months later...

Hi everyone...I must say my cruise last year was an eventful one. It's now close to a year ago. Reading all the give n take of conversation.

The late departure close to midnight had no real affect on us. We DID find out the 4 folks that chose to leave the ship were upset "because the couldn't gamble" Sigh

The 1 or 2 that were HANDCUFFED off the ship was due to "drugs located "

We did have wonderful entertainment by the dive team. Great bodies. ..went on for HOURS

THE Oscar Oscar Oscar happened in the Florida straits upon our return. I was loosing in the casino at the time..at security gal had a walkie talkie on and we heard it on her device. Then the ship hard left then right...that's when we were told as we were walking about about turning around because someone "fell" over board

Unfortunately he jumped not fell

We returned to our cabin as instructed. Canadian ship and us (coast guard)

and a boat from the ship were all involved in the search. Erie silence...no band no loud voices. ..dead stop...we were released by the USCG after I think 2 hours (don't quote me) and we were on our way back to PE.

Listen... if the ship is in an upright position, there's music playing on the deck, and the bar is open, who cares what time the ship leaves port?!?

We're all blessed to be on vacation. CHILL!

Amen!

Plus on the first evening I couldn't tell you if we're at sea or not - I'm getting ready for dinner/going to dinner/going to the welcome aboard show, and then later, up on deck. What difference does it possibly make? :)

In November we were set to sail on the Navigator. We flew in the day before arriving about 11:30 in Galveston after our flight and a few hours after that we got the remains of a hurricane that hit the Pacific Coast of Mexico the day before. It was a weakened tropical storm by then, but dumped tons of rain on Texas. The day we boarded, the road to the pier was under water and we were hoping not to get stuck while on the bus to the pier. We got there in a driving rain, dropped off our luggage and got inside the terminal. We boarded easily and everyone was inside due to the weather. We were on the starboard side of the ship, and the weather was from that side. They had us stay inside for the muster drill. After the muster drill, the captain announced that the channel had been closed and we would depart the next morning at 11:00.

We did not hear any complaining, maybe because the many people who drove to Galveston found roads closed and were just happy to finally be on board. Maybe also because it was not due to mechanical problems. We left a little after 11:00and the captain did an awesome job of turning the ship around in strong and gusty winds. Once on our way, we left the worst of the weather behind fairly soon.

I just read the OP's original link and I must say, the immaturity from some of the posters complaining is absolutely jaw dropping and has me wondering how they handle REAL problems. What a remarkable display of self-centeredness and entitlement. Ya'll are welcome to go to another cruise line, you won't be missed.

Maybe RCI management might prefer deciding for themselves whether or not to refer its customers to competing cruise lines.

I wouldn't say some of the posters - looked like just one. Anyway, I'm glad this is a year old thread about something as minor as a delayed departure. I'll be on Liberty soon and was worried that it was having some major problem, when I saw the thread title.

That moment when you are reading a thread thinking its current news only to look up and notice it is over a year old. Somehow I missed this one back then
