Diamond Princess, cyclone Olwyn & cyclone Nathan

Recommended Posts

The Diamond Princess dodged bad weather associated with cyclone Olwyn off the WA coast. Our steward told us the crew were told to expect bad weather the night we were heading into the area, but it wasn't too bad (maybe around 5-6metre seas).

Because of Cyclone Nathan, there was doubt about our call into Port Douglas on 21st March and all shore tours were cancelled. The captain told us that he would be making a decision later in the day (20th March) and he announced at 5pm that we would be stopping at Port Douglas and that all shore tours were reinstated. The weather was lovely, but the visibility on the reef wasn't very good.

The worst weather we had on the cruise was in Bass Strait. We were to be in Hobart from 7am on 3rd March until 1pm on 4th March, but the Captain announced on the 3rd that there was a low pressure system tracking towards the west coast of Tasmania where we were supposed to be going. He decided to leave Hobart at 7am on the 4th and back-track up the east coast of Tas, then cruise through Bass Strait to our next port, Adelaide. Sounds a good plan, but sometimes good plans don't work out. We were told later that the low changed direction and we sailed through it when we were going through Bass Strait. We have two days of bad weather with seas up to 9 metres. This was the official figure supplied by a senior officer. As far as I could see, there wasn't any damage on the ship, but it was uncomfortable for a lot of people. :)
