We went on the Jade last month and having done this trip before, we decided to concentrate on some lesser known sites. I have produced a video showing these here (if it works):

Stromboli was giving quite a show as we passed it on the way to Messina.

We just went around close to the ship in Pireaus and Katakolon but when we got to Istanbul, we decided to go and visit some of the lesser visited places so be did the Suleymaniye Mosque and Chora Museum before heading back to the main area to spend a short time in Hagia Sofia and the Basilica Cisterns.

We also chose a trip to Herculaneum rather than Pompeii having been there before and it was completely different.

Hope you enjoy the video

I didn't say why Herculaneum was so different. When Vesuvius erupted, it dropped mostly ash on Pompeii. This ash remained porous to air so all the bodies decomposed and left the spaces that were filled with plaster to produce those amazing body casts.

Herculaneum is much closer to Vesuvius and it felt the full force of the pyroplastic flow and that basically burned everything as it raced down the side of the volcano. That terrible event was followed by a rush of mud that sealed the remains of the people from air. The result was that the human bones were preserved in the mud until they were excavated. You can see these in the Herculaneum part of the video in the beach-side caverns as you go into the excavations You can also see the depth of that mud that was removed to bring the city back to life.
