I often ask (whenever these threads come up) if SIL stands for son-in-law or sister-in-law. Sometimes it can be figured out from the context, but not all of the time. I always use "hubby" and "the girl" (for my daughter), but a few years ago while reviewing a recent cruise, somebody tried to take me to task for using "the girl." One of my fellow cruisers, who actually met "the girl" defended me and said that my hubby and me actually referred to her as "the girl" on the cruise (as in "oh, the girl's over there").
