W5KAP Posted April 26, 2015 #2 Share Posted April 26, 2015 I guess it depends on which line you want to use. I can only speak to Princess as thet are who we sailed through the Panama Canal, They use the Coral Princess and its sister ship the Island Princess. They are called the Panamax ships as they are the largest that Princess owns that will fit through the current locks. They hold about 1900 passengers and are really nice sized ships. I can;t speak to any other lines though we have sailed also on Carnival. Cheers, Kenn
CruiserBruce Posted April 26, 2015 #3 Share Posted April 26, 2015 (edited) All HAL's Vista class ships, carrying almost 2000 pax fit, as do their Signature class ships, which have 2200. Friends just went through on Celebrity Infinity, which carries 2170. So you can see the max load, in pax, will be in the low 2 thousands. Many cruise lines have ships in this size range. The Canal locks are 1050 feet long, 110 feet wide, and 41.2 feet deep. That is the true restricting factor. Freedom of the Seas is quite a bit too big. Northern Aurora Posted April 26, 2015 #4 Share Posted April 26, 2015 We were through the canal in late March on the Celebrity Infinity (one of their M-class ships), and the Infinity just fits. And I mean -- just fits.
PCWalton1 Posted April 26, 2015 #5 Share Posted April 26, 2015 Radiance class are the largest that Royal Caribbean sends through. And as was pointed out to you in your other message string it is doubtful Voyager/Freedom class will ever go as they are too tall for clearance under one of the bridges. BillB48 Posted April 27, 2015 #6 Share Posted April 27, 2015 For passenger ships and container ships the cut off of dimensions is 965'x106'... so any ship at or approaching those figures is considered a Panamax ship. Radiance class with RCI, Coral and Island Princess, M class with Celebrity and all of HAL's present ships will fit through the present locks. Most of these ships are considered Panamax. When the expansion locks are up and running the dimensions will increase to 1200'x160' when using the new locks.
