Room service and to go food

considering he is speaking as an NCL rep and not just some random person, I would hope that it would have assuaged some fears

It doesn't. He's talking about a cruise he took in Mid April. Rules have since changed.

You can ONLY take food to go from the Buffet. Many have already reported this.

I have read thread after thread about all of the NCL changes and remained largely silent. I try to stay as positive as I can on these boards and also to avoid being flamed, as I have enough stress in the real world and don't need it here. Go through my past posts if you don't believe me...I am usually a little ray of sunshine :p or, at least, someone who just tries to get and give useful information.

However, when I am on the Breakaway this summer, if anyone tries to tell me that I cannot take a plate of snacks back from the buffet to enjoy on my large, lovely aft balcony, they are going to encounter a stereotypical loud Italian New York crazy woman...I'm talking the stuff legends are made of.

NCL can raise fees, add charges, etc. and, while I may not agree with the way in which they were implemented, I'll deal with them as services that I may or may not choose to use. However, I will definitely not be told when or where I can consume a plate of cheese, fruit, pretzel rolls, etc. that I paid for, along with the balcony that I paid for in order to relax how I want to, which...oh my GAWD...might include with some darn cheese.

By the way, I totally understand that it is not confirmed whether people have actually had problems with taking food from the buffet to enjoy in other places, but in case it arises as an actual issue, I just felt the need to do some advance venting...and also to plan the Mission Impossible-style maneuvers by which I will evade the pretzel roll police. Rant over...returning to optimism now :D.

I love your post! We were loyal NCL cruisers until the last time when the quality, service and attitude had slipped noticeably in our experience. And that was before all this kerfuffle about extra charges for services that previously were mainly complimentary. However, if we should decide to book a cruise on NCL in future, I too, (though of Irish descent) would like to see someone try to stop me from taking a treat back to my room to enjoy on my balcony! I can see myself designing a special tote bag and packing extra ziploc bags--I'm rebellious like that. 😇 We have a popular bar and grill with the best chicken wings in the world near our house. At happy hour they once made this rule that if you don't finish every single chicken wing you order you cannot take them home. You must throw them away. So we brought ziplock bags and if we had a few left over, rather than waste them just bagged them up and put them in my handbag. It was so stupid. Customers were really irate about the rule and it was just a matter of weeks/months before the rule became history. Thankfully. Their wings are so amazing that the idea of throwing them away totally went against nature! Haha!

For those who decide to carry food back to their room, may I make a suggestion? Please pack a roll of plastic wrap and take it with you. Not only will it be cleaner but you will have taken one of their possible objections away from allowing you to do so.

I just got off the Sky this morning. After dinner at Cagney's they offered us dessert, but I didn't want anything more to eat.

Thinking of this thread and wanting the dessert later, I asked if we could take it to go. They had it delivered to my room.

I'm sry if this was said and I missed it but is it definitely true that food isn't allowed outside the buffet? We love to have breakfast on the balcony. How could this possibly be enforced if it's true?
Some passengers just returning have said that they definitely were able to bring food out of the buffet.

I don't understand. Could you please explain what the plastic wrap is for? Is it to "line" the tray with? Is it to put on top of the food? I guess if I knew what NCL's objection was, I would already know the answer to this!

I am puzzled by the plastic wrap solution as well. Too big and cumbersome to carry a roll around, and too conspicuous to whip out and unfurl. Zip locks tuck right into your purse, come in a variety of sizes, are spill proof and once the food is transferred, it can go right into the purse.

NCL's main objection seems to be that you are not ordering the item from room service and paying a $7.95 delivery fee.

Cagneys on the Sky is the best! We had the UDP on our last Sky cruise in November. Ate there 3 nights out of 4. Last night my wife couldn't finish her steak, they offered to box it for her to take to the room. She ate it for breakfast the next day! I can't say enough about the service we had on that cruise in Cagneys.

So, you can bring food back from buffet but NOT from restaurants.

'Health & safety' was the reason. Yes, sure! Even a 3 yo would laugh on this one!

If is a 'heath & safety' issue then you would of heard it from national tv and etc. And this would affect all cruise lines and not just NCL, LOL

What doesn't make much sense about the "Health & Safety" rationale is that its venue-based and not type-of-food based. So you can't take a plate of vegetables back from the MDR, but you can take a bowl of cottage cheese back from the buffet. I would think the latter would pose more H&S concerns than the former.

Also, at least on Princess, they would often have some of the same entrees in the buffet as in the MDR (not as elegantly prepared, but the same basic entrée), so it doesn't make a ton of sense, from an H&S standpoint, to allow me to bring it from one place but not the other.

Finally, I don't see how the person who hands the food over makes much of a difference either. Allowing someone to prepare or handle my food between the kitchen and the MDR, but not to put it in a box seems strange. Also, the buffet (at least on Princess) had an omelet station and carving stations, so its not all "help yourself."
