Feeling the motion of the ocean...

Recommended Posts

So I'm really looking forward to this trip and I'm pretty calm, but lets say I'm nervous one day/night if the water is extra choppy and I want to go relax somewhere. Our room is on deck 7 - is there another public place on the ship I can go where I will feel the movement less than other places? We'll be on the Freedom of The Seas.

Also, any tips to calm my nerves/take my mind off it if for some reason I do get a bit anxious during choppy waters? Booze? :p

thanks!

I can tell you that the starboard side of WJ and all of Olive or Twist had a very noticeable vibration. Pitch and roll were noticeable in the MDR. Roll more noticeable at night when the ship tends to sail faster.

No reason to get nervous. There are several places to sit on decks 2 and 3 as close to aft as possible. They're not necessarily quiet areas during the evening (casino, Boleros, etc.) but you will be able to find a spot. We had a night or two of some pretty good rolling and it wasn't even that noticeable on the promenade either. Take some bonine and you won't have any issues. Outside in the fresh air on deck 4 is good too since you'll be able to see the horizon.

Ginger anti-nausea tablets, ginger lozenges, ginger gum, ginger tea. Pharmacy and health food outlets generally carry one or more of these.

Unfortunately booze may make things worse.

If you are very sensitive to motion have a chat with your family physician.

If you look to the far horizon it may help, don't sit in restaurant and look at see through the window near to the ship. Or low deck and middle of ship with no windows.

Plus take tablets BEFORE you feel unwell, don't wait until you are, prevention is better than cure. Check the forecast for the next day and take tablets each day if necessary.

I would get some bonine before the trip and bring it with you. I start taking it the day before we board and I've never had a problem. I tried the patch and while it helped with seasickness, the side effects were not fun. I then did bonine and a bracelet and that worked. I forgot the bracelet on my last trip, and the bonine alone was just fine. The bonine isn't going to harm you (it may interact with alcohol) and it's better to have something with you than to have to worry about whether the ship's doctor's office is open or having to go down several decks to get something.

Yes, you'll probably feel the ship moving, but it shouldn't be too bad. I don't know if you have to take any tenders or smaller boats during the trip, but you may actually feel the seasickness more on those than on the big ship. You'll definitely want to take something before you go on one of those boats.

I found the casino a good place for this, seriously! No windows and a distraction.

I took the tablets from the infirmary once, never again. I slept all day and until the next morning, I was so groggy. Felt hungover the next day too.

Liberty was the same on the vibration! I chocked it up to the propulsion system just fixed. I remember being up at WJ at about close, and we were getting rocked occasionsly!

Promenade deck seemed good and being outside! Ginger Ale seems to help and readily available[emoji2]! The other thing that helped me is raspberry tea and mint gum this was settling after the flu. Overall I barely felt Liberty rock.

Be prepared, but don't stress over it, and enjoy! You will start it just on stress alone[emoji32]. Liberty was great, so I am sure Freedom is just as great. They are prue incredible marvals! The shows are awesome. Enjoy your cruise!

Our go-to is ginger. I buy either the Trader Joe's brand of ginger mints or I get the ginger-pear mints from Fresh Market. Both are up near the cash registers in most stores. You suck on those until they dissolve. Ginger is a natural digestive aid. If it gets bad I go for Bonine. And for me, on the rare occasion I've felt queasy due to seas, I've had success finding a lounger somewhere in the fresh air, but have looked up at the sky rather than the horizon or (God-forbid) looking at the sea.

thanks everyone!

I'm actually not worried about feeling sick (bringing Bonine) - I was mostly thinking if I start to get nervous if it's really moving one night - I can get a bit anxious :p. Just wondering best places to go to relax and take my mind off it.

Great suggestions and looks like a bar may be just what the doctor ordered in this case.:D

You might wanna stick to the promenade-level bars on the center of the ship, it's all interior, you won't feel any pitch and rolling or see it like you would on the pool deck, and between people watching, great music and games to enjoy, it's very very easy to forget you're on a moving ship!

I'd recommend the pub, which is close to the middle and usually has some kind of folk guitar/singalong style entertainment. The On Air Karaoke bar is also on Freedom, just before the ice rink entrance. There's usually a lively piano crowd at Schooner bar, too! Finding something to sip on there and forget your worries should be easy!

Seconding avoiding Olive or Twist/The cocktail bar up above the Sports Deck. This was actually where a friend and I went up on purpose one night could really FEEL the rocking motion. Especially because the H20 Zone kiddie pool is lit up and the foot and a half of water would be sloshing back and forth sort of hypnotically, like one of those fancy water-filled desk paperweights. I actually wasn't scary or nauseating so much as a rhythmically relaxing light and water show, after a few Jameson & Gingers!

Overall, there's really no reason to be nervous about the state of the waves. RCCL designs some of the biggest passenger cruising fleets in the world, and keeps the fleet in ship shape. The captain's ultimately a responsible guy, and will make the final calls to assure the smoothest sailing possible! Pay attention to your muster drill, and know that the whole crew on board is absolutely dedicated to your safety on top of helping you have a great vacation.

Enjoy your time aboard!

I'm not happy unless the ship is rocking and rolling and they put the barf bags out....best cruise we ever been on was when we were dodging 3 hurricanes...that was wild!

(I think that was the same year as Katrina)

This is a cruise on the ocean after all...we always book a room on the highest deck possible, and as far forward as possible. Usually a GS.

If I did not like it, I would not do it....
