oakworth96 Posted May 13, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 13, 2015 Hi, off on the azura around the Norwegian fjords on the 22th may but wanting to know people's experiences with the currency(krone) or using bank cards in the shops and cafes and cash machines. I have a bank card that doesn't charge for transactions abroad so would be a advantage to use instead of taking to much krone cash. Cheers bob
Thejuggler Posted May 13, 2015 #2 Share Posted May 13, 2015 We drew cash from local cash machines, but as it is very difficult to spend less than £5 we preferred using the card. Easier than being left with Norwegian coins. If you buy any gifts don't forget the VAT refund forms. A tax officer will be on board at your last port of call to do the refund. mkh999 Posted May 13, 2015 #3 Share Posted May 13, 2015 Hi We are on Britannia Fjords this Saturday. We are meeting our Norwegian friends who live in Stavanger on 21st May. They have said that we don't need to bother with any Krone as all shops and tourist attractions take credit cards, in fact most Norwegians use credit cards for all their purchases. They also said that most shops take Euros but do not give very good exchange rates. Hope this helps. Martyn

majortom10 Posted May 13, 2015 #7 Share Posted May 13, 2015 Thanks for your replies, looks like it bank card all the way[emoji6] Just as a thought dont fall into the trap that a couple did on our last cruise to Norway in Bergen. They had decided not to change any money to Norwegian Krone and manage with Euros and we saw them outside the indoor fish market asking people, they hoped were off the cruise, if they had any Norwegian Krone coins to swap for Euros or UK because her hubby wanted to use toilet desperately and the one at fish market building you needed Norwegian money to use.

It was a case of no pay - no go. You also have to pay at the tourist building at Mount Dalsnibba (from Geiranger). We had been forewarned and got plenty of NOK in coins at a bank at our first port of call, so just walked past the noisy queue, paid up and went in. You should have sold your spare coins to the highest bidders. :D
tom_uk Posted May 14, 2015 #10 Share Posted May 14, 2015 We had no luck getting bars in Kristiansand to take €s last summer. So we went to the cash machine and just withdrew Krone. Much easier.
LondonTowner Posted May 14, 2015 #11 Share Posted May 14, 2015 When we did a Norway cruise a few years ago we did get some Krone before we went. We spent them all, but could easily have managed with just our CC. In 2013 we did a Baltic cruise and didn't change any money at all, although we do always have a supply of Euros. KaththeTaff Posted May 14, 2015 #12 Share Posted May 14, 2015 It's a good idea to remember about the public toilets but there are alternatives! On our two most recent Norway cruises we haven't used any cash at all, all our purchases have been by card, debit cards for small souvenirs, and credit cards for bigger purchases like the expensive food and drink. We've used the toilets when they were free, or during one of refreshment calls. It's also become our habit to go just before we get off the ship!
