Sales tax while in port ?

I did search but came up with nothing but my question embedded in another thread so I thought I'd start a new thread for the question.

 

We are sailing the BA in August and have 3 days in Bermuda. We got the UBP as part of the last promo,

 

When ordering drinks while still in port in NY, do we have to pay sales tax ? If so, how much is the tax ?

 

What happens in Bermuda since we are there for 3 days ? Do we pay Bermuda sales tax on our drinks ? And how much is it ?

 

Also, since the shops and casinos are typically closed while in port on previous cruises in the Carribean, does this mean all that will be closed for the 3 days we are docked in Bermuda ?

I was surprised to find local tax on my drinks bill while in port at Miami. I would no longer be surprised to find the ship conforming to local law while in port. I can't say for sure, exemptions may be available in Bermuda, but I would expect taxes and closures.

I believe in NY you will pay sales tax. Not sure how this applies to UBP.

No tax in Bermuda.

 

The shops will be closed while docked in Bermuda, but the casino is allowed to open at night.

I'm glad there is no tax in Bermuda on drinks but kinda bummed the shops are closed for the whole 3 days... Not that there is ever much to buy but I do like wandering through them occasionally.

Yes in the port of New York you will pay sales tax on beverages. Not sure of the rate, but I live in Orange County and our tax rate is 8.12%. If you already have the UBP they wait until out at sea to bill you (I believe they gave us hand receipts last year until after we were out of port)
