Switch from NA to Eurodam

Recommended Posts

We sailed Eurodam five cruises and I don't remember experiencing any severe vibration and I would remember had that been the case.

We sailed two cruises on NA but I don't recall vibration on her either. Perhaps this is a relatively new development.

That's a good question, but there are people who are reporting it both before we sailed, and after. I did "Live From" threads for all three weeks, and you can trust me that if we had experienced it, I would have made the vibration fodder for a running gag. I live for something I can turn into a multipost humor product. We had a video camera, a still camera that shot video, and two smartphones with video capabilities. It could have been comedy gold. Alas, it was not to be.

I don't recall any of our fellow CCers mentioning vibration, and there were quite a few of us. I certainly wouldn't have held back. It's also not something that's really subjective. Some people find the shows too loud; others not. Some people think the ship's too cold. Others think it's too hot. I get that. It's a judgment call. But either your eggs dance and your wine glass skitters across the table - or they don't. The only "action food" we had was the melting chocolate bowl in the Pinnacle. (Awesome.) Moving food jokes practically write themselves.

How would you like your eggs? Scrambled? Poached?

I'll have two eggs, over. All over the place!

===

I'd like a glass of water.

Still or sparkling, sir?

There's nothing still on this table!

===

Just a missed opportunity.... At least I had prunes to work with.

Well, thank you mostly everyone for your helpful answers.

Still was not sure but have decided to err on the side of caution so cancelled NA and booked Eurodam. Got a better location for a slightly lower price.

Looking forward to our cruise - been a few years since we were on a HAL ship.

Thanks.

Ellen

Have a great cruise. (Unless I'm not one of the mostly helpful answer people... in which case I hope your teeth shake loose.)

Just kidding, of course. I think you've made an excellent choice on either ship. Have a wonderful trip! If you can, shoot some video. Jello is probably your best bet. :D

Without even reading any posts that were posted since yesterday afternoon because I need to post the following:

First off: let me apologize to the OP, the Video Poster of the Lido on Nieuw Amsterdam on his/her cruise, kjw and any others that I doubted in regards to the vibrations experienced.

That said, I have learned that the ship was under full speed to get to Ft Lauderdale in order to evacuate a passenger in a life threatening situation!!

The passenger could not be evacuated via normal means, USCG Helicopter or .... due to weather and sea conditions, so the Captain sped the ship up to get into Fort Lauderdale ASAP. He got there at 4am, used the thrusters to hold the ship against the first dock it came to, and an ambulance was there to take the passenger and family member to Broward Health Medical Center which was 5 minutes from the port.

NOTE: I've asked the passenger and Family member, both of whom are fellow Cruise Critic members, for permission to relate their experience as they related it to me in an email. I await their response.

So Again, I do apologize for doubting the veracity of the reporting and ask that you all understand the reasoning for the severe vibrations from that evening on the Nieuw Amsterdam. It makes sense that under full steam ahead, bad seas and weather conditions there would be the vibrations to be so severe.

On that

EDITED TO ADD: I am wondering if the vibrations that are being reported sporadically is due to sea, weather and speed? As Sail7Seas, POA1 and I related we did not feel the vibrations on our cruises and yet there are some from before and after ours that did........Makes me think that as stated there is a known flaw (I think it was POA1 mentioned it, but...) in both the Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam and high speed caused it to be even worse...I do not know as I am not smart enough to, but........

Been on the Nieuw 4 times.

Inaugural suite 6054 24 day Med cruise 2010

Mediterrainean Tapestry 24 day cruise 2013 suite 6054

B2B Western/Eastern Carribean cruise SS suite 6056

B2B Western/Eastern Carribean cruise SS suite 6056

No vibrations problems what so ever!

Now the only vibration that we felt was at The Tamarind. We always have the same booth as you enter turn left and left again in the corner. Now opposite us in the other corner people would be seated and then be asked to move. Did see the artificial plant vibrate.

Other than that we felt nothing!

Now we will be on The Eurodam next Oct/2016 doing the Mediteranian Romance cruise and will be in 6054.will see how our room will be, but for us vibration would be a no big Deal

I hope that people enjoy their cruising on both the Nieuw and The Eurodam! I love both ships,

Happy cruising all.

Denise:)

Folks should grow up. Yes vibrations occur. They are not cruise threatening unless perfection is your goal.

I don't think it's a matter of threatening the cruise, rather there are some folks that are more sensitive to motion than others may be, and this could be an issue for them. Folks should just be nice...even if perfection isn't your goal.

I have been following this because I was thinking of booking an Alaska cruise on this ship for next year. This morning I read a very good explanation of this vibration issue on another thread on this topic, which made sense. I think if I do decide to book, I will book a mid-ship cabin.

It is not that uncommon to ask for links, question information, or where posters have wanted to see the full information including some of our regulars. Vibrations can be caused by who is at the controls and not just the ship. We had a vibration that bad on the Veendam leaving San Diego and repeated noticeable vibrations at various points on our trip. Some/much of normal vibration can be explained because we were near the aft elevator.

Thanks for running down the details. That's a lot of detective work and you should be applauded.

We've been digging and we have found vibration videos from all of the cruise lines operating out of Florida, most of the high rise buildings, and every single drawbridge I can think of.

I originally thought that the person who posted the video in this thread was the person who shot the video. (Spoiler Alert!)

Apparently not.

Not detective work at all Brian. The passenger and family member/fellow CC Members are friends of ours that we met while cruising. The family member sent me an email yesterday telling me that they liked a post I made on another subject (It was meant as a funny;)) When I wrote back to them last night that Roger and I had only the day before been talking about them, I asked how they were. This mornings email had the story and I was floored.......... It just happened to be the last night of the same cruise the complaint was about.....................

Joanie, on our January 2013 NA cruise to the Western Caribbean, there was no medical nor full speed ahead, yet the vibrations were felt throughout the ship. I doubt there was any medical problem and/of full speed ahead for the poster who mentioned this morning the vibration and being moved to another cabin on the cruise across the pond in April on the NA.

Ours was not bad as an earthquake, as I'm from California and have experienced many. However, I've slept through earthquakes, something that many of us didn't do for a couple of nights on that cruise.

We did have the stewards take all of our glassware out of our aft wrap cabin as the clanking was constant. As I said earlier on a post,. this vibration was brought up the first night at the Suite Welcoming Party, and we were told it would be corrected on the "next dry-dock".

It's possible, that the following cruise and the one after experienced no vibration. Being aft wrap cabin dwellers, were used to the various movements, but this one cruise was extraordinary. :(

Just returned from the 24 day Iberian and Baltic Adventure cruise on the Eurodam. We were midship in cabin 8079 right next to the outside elevator. We never felt any vibration on the ship with the exception of The Tamarind. We were at a corner table and it vibrated so much that it really ruined the dinner for us. But...this was the only place we noticed any vibration.

Last year we did the 24 day Magic of the Med on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Again, we were midship in cabin 6082 right next to the outside elevator. We didn't feel any vibration on the NA at all.

For us, being midship with a verandah is our criteria - preferably next to the outside elevators so we have people on only one side. We never had a problem with any noise because of the elevators. Not sure what we'll do when we sail a ship with only inside elevators!!

We were on the Eurodam Dec. of 2010 when ship was new and the Nieuw Amsterdam the end of November 2011. Don't recall vibration, but our cabin both times were mid-ship. This November we will be on Nieuw Amsterdam in a cabin near the REAR elevator. Hope we won't be experiencing any vibrations during night since I am a very light sleeper. I do remember that our Eurodam cabin was very cold. I was prepared for that on Nieuw Amsterdam cruise and packed my flannel p.j.'s. This year it looks like I'll be experiencing both a cold cabin and a possible vibrating rear one.

Helen would you mind telling us who the Captain & Hotel Mgr. was on your Eurodam cruise & do you know if they will be on board mid November of this year?

Thanks

I honestly don't know. The Captain changed after the first 12 days of the cruise. I seem to remember that last name of Scott but I'm really not sure. I can tell you who captained the NA the year before but only because I brought home the "explorer." We also don't really pay much attention to the hotel manager. I'm sure if there was a problem I would know.

I do know the names of the dealers in the casino. Will that help??

IMHO: Everyone is different and vibration is very subjective. We will be going on our 10th Transatlantic on the Nieuw Amsterdam in November. In the past we have felt the vibration, mostly in the Lido and Tamarind by the window. It never bothered us, nothing "danced" off the table, etc. The problem was a bearing in an azipod. They did some work in drydock prior to the TA last spring, and it was much less noticeable.

We had an aft wrap suite on the NA. We disembarked on 9/13. We felt almost nothing. Once in the Lido there may have been a little vibration but nothing to even consider a problem. I think this is becoming an Urban Myth about the NA.

Which aft wrap did you have? We have 7132 booked for Alaska in May and was wondering if there was vibration in that cabin.
