Which ship?

Cash only operation. Can charge cash to your ship account @ 3%.

Do the newer ships allow you to use your ship card directly in the machine? I think so...

Thanks. I was just asking in general but good to know that the newer ones can charge...do they have the 3% fee then too? Or is it done differently on them.

On Hetaway you can put your room card in the a lot and can charge money to your account.

The little screen tells you each step

You first need to get a pin # from the casino desk

Yes, and there will be a 3% surcharge when you do.

If you'd like to front load money without carrying cash, you can do it through a wire transfer, traveler's check, or certified check. The certified check should be the least expensive option (usually zero depending on the bank or credit union.) You make it out to yourself, then fax the front of the check to NCL's casino folks. Bring the check on the cruise and they will complete the transfer on board. Any remaing funds are returned as a check back to you from NCL.

Cash is the easiest and by far the cheapest. No going to bank. No dealing with front desk. No nothing.

Always amazed that some folks are reluctant to carry around a few thousand in cash

If your cash gets stolen, it's gone. A cashier's check or traveler's check and be reversed/recovered.

On the Breakaway, you could use your room card at the slots. We used cash, so don't know what the fees would have been. Depending on your destination, you could get extra cash at an ATM when you dock.

Actually there is at least one ATM right in the Casino on Breakaway. (I had to visit it often! :) )

Saw the ATM in the Breakaway casino - and there were quite a few people using it. Can't image what the fees would be on the ship, but at least it's an option if you need cash. I can't think of any other place on the ship where cash is needed, unless you decide to tip in cash.

The NCL casinos only use cash correct? You can not charge to your room if I remember right. I know some lines you can and I am not confusing myself.

Another option is to contact Casinos at Sea and set up a credit line/account in advance....but they WILL need to contact your bank. But there is no 3% fee charged if you go this route.

You need to take a blank check to them at some point...and they will hold it until the end of the cruise...at which point you just fill in the amount that you have taken out...

Easy peasey.....and prob TOO easy as I have written WAY too many large checks at the end of the trip! But we do play/gamble a lot....so this option is best for us.

The ATM fee is $5.50 per transaction. On Breakaway and Getaway, the ATM machines also double as bill breakers and you can cash in tickets from the slot machines. Maybe that's why you saw so many people using them.

I am not sure how the slots on newer ships handle the ship card being used directly in the machine for play.

I'm not sure what people mean when they say newer ship, but last year on the Sky I used my card directly in the slot machine for play. In fact I did it in two ways:

1. Downloaded $5 and was charged $0.15, the 3% fee

2. Downloaded free play added to my card bit by bit, no fees charged

When the free play was added by the host he gave me a slip of paper with download instructions, but those were incorrect and that is how I first paid the 3% fee, since I was $0.15 I didn't stress. I was able to use the prompts on the screen to figure out the free play download process, but I couldn't explain it to you.

My free play was a result of the $100 OBC for buying a future cruise certificate. I was able to have a good time playing and pulled the $100 out as cash due to winning as I played. I didn't win anything big, but walking off the ship with that $100 was good enough for me.

I'm looking forward to playing on the Getaway in 56 days!

I see folks sometimes mention that they used the $100 OBC for booking a FCC for gambling or drinks. I wonder how you do this. I just looked at the receipts for our last two cruises and in each case the $100 is gone as soon as the FCC is booked. My receipt looks like this: FCC- $250. OBC-$100. Balance due- $150. NCL immediately takes the OBC against the FCC thus no money left to spend somewhere else.

When I bought FCC I told consultant I wanted to use in casino. He gave me a slip to take to the host and host loaded the money on my card.

My onboard bill was $560, so I think I was charged full price for FCC:

($200 Spa, $250 FCC, $20 soda package, $50 photos, rest in gift shop).

No, you can and as far as I know always been able to charge to your cabin. As mentioned there is a 3% charge. They didn't used to even charge that, but added the amount after other lines were doing it.
