We're arriving at Southampton on August 27 and will need quick and hopefully economical transportation to Gatwick. Any advice? Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

You can get a train via Brighton, takes about 90 minutes. Google Southampton to Gatwick.

If considering a train, then Q at port for a taxi to Southampton Station, carry your cases etc to and on train, then at Gatwick lift off and carry to luggage trolley park. Just too much trouble, so book a taxi, load, go and relax.

We have done the train a few times but it is not good as you have to get up and down steps with luggage in Gatwick and it is always very busy. Plus twice the trains broke down and we were left on a freezing cold platform and took five hours to get to Southampton. Never again!

We have tried National Express coach witch is very good and takes around two hours.

Best by far though is Smiths Airport Transfers who will meet you and take you to your hotel or cruise terminal. They charge around £76 for the journey and the cars are good and the driver will help with your luggage. You can book online. We use them always nowadays and just booked them for our next cruise.

Best thing would be to e mail them and ask. I have found that they respond quickly, even bearing in mind they are five hours ahead of US time. I believe, however, that they will add the 'congestion charge' (required in central London) to the fare. We priced them for taking us from Southampton to a hotel in London, and a hotel at Heathrow. The price to the Heathrow hotel was about 20 pounds less.

Thank you. Since we will be staying in London, theadditional 20 pounds is worth it.
