What Carnival item do you think is overrated?

Overrated: warm chocolate melting cake, playlist productions, Hasbro, and Platinum level people who must begin all conversations with "I'm platinum so..."

Certainly not fair to all of us who are Platinum. I know I mention it because I have been a fan in the past - enough to have sailed many times on Carnival - way back since 1981. I think there are a lot of Platinum members who aren't happy with the direction the line is going. Don't be so sensitive, not everyone is bragging.

The fish and chips. Talk about a grease bomb!

The Fish and Chips serves much more than just fried fish. The bouillabaisse is excellent as well as the cold seafood selections. DH loves the fried oysters.

I've sailed carnival 4 times. RC twice. I think most things that I think are hyped up are things that others enjoy...just not for me. I, personally, love the Caribbean music on deck, the waterworks area (I have kids, but loved it even before they came along!). I don't love the party atmosphere, but that's because I don't party! [emoji2] that being said, I enjoy switching up cruise lines from time to time to get the things from one cruise line that I can't get from another (water slides and cheaper prices...go carnival! Better shows and less party atmosphere...go RC).

But the one thing that does consistently disappoint me about Carnival are the desserts. I have a massive sweet tooth, and always want to look forward to trying desserts I don't get off ship...and every time they're bland. At least they can't go wrong with ice cream. [emoji1]

Drink of the Day (DOD) or any of the fruity mixed drinks.

It's something you have to have because you're on a cruise and it just fits the atmosphere and it's part of the vacation experience, but no way would you ever find one of those overly-sweetened $8+ chemical concoctions enjoyable back home or at a regular restaurant. Needless to say I will be enjoying many of those on my upcoming cruise with the alcohol package!

I agree with you. I LOVE dessert. The ones on Carnival are often beautiful but have no taste at all. Like you, I like the ice cream, especially what is served in the MDR. I always try a bite of other desserts and think "no way this is worth the calories."

Which brings me to the biggest disappointment of them all: the Baked Alaska. I always think I'll like it, and then it is a big dud.

I had it on Celebrity and it was the most wonderful thing ever.

Warm chocolate melting cake - People act like Carnival invented chocolate fondant

Fun ship special - Its not the best drink on board...even if it is sailaway only drink.

Hairy chest contest - Creepy as hell with rubbing of hair....eww.

Playlist - Just bad and cheaply made

Casino - Feel this way about all casinos

Certain regular 'famous' guests that think they own Carnival - They dont.

and the most overrated thing of all is...

Red Frog Beer - tastes like coloured coors (ie nothing) and they serve it in a chilled glass *shudders*

For so many people thinking the adult comedy is overrated, it sure seems that it is SRO on every cruise...

Well you won't find us there. Not about to stand in line to listen to unfunny comedians who think that the more F bombs they use the funnier they are.

Agreed. We will probably try the early family friendly shows and see how they are.

Our most overrated thing, the MDR. We would rather grab pizza or a deli sandwich and eat in 20 minutes and move on the fun activities than spend 90 being served dinner.

I agree! I'm glad the MDR is there for the people that enjoy it and I'm glad other dining options are available for those who don't want to eat in the MDR!

Casino offers on cruises. People act like they are getting free cruises when they are really prepaying for them in the casino. At probably a much higher rate than if they would have just paid for the cruise in the first place.

I think it is safe to say that anyone who gambles enough to get a free cruise knows enough about gambling to realize that it is a losing proposition. I know, I am one of them who has received plenty of free "cabins" it is not a free cruise. Just the cabin is free.

We gamble because we like to gamble. Sometimes we win, we usually lose but we look at it as entertainment.

The reason myself and others here get so excited about the "free" cabins is because at least we are getting something given to us for doing an activity that we would do anyway. It would be like renting a villa at HMC and CCL giving you a free inside cabin to say thank you.

My wife and I like to gamble. The only time we gamble is on vacation and that is part of our vacation budget. Because of the two "free" cabins we received on our last cruise we now have a GS booked that cost us $700.00 and an inside booked that cost us port taxes.

I just checked CCL fare viewer and those two cabins would cost more than $5000.00 as of today. I lost nowhere near 5K on my last cruise and we had a blast in the casino.

If you don't gamble or don't like to gamble I don't expect you to understand.

Totally agree - I find the food pretty gross for the most part. Love cruising but I'm totally mystified when people rave about the food...one step above Golden Corral imho. And not a big step.

You do know you can eat in the MDR right? Just talked to a guy yesterday who thought he had to pay $35 to eat in the MDR so he ate buffet the whole time which is yucky for the most part. But the night they have lamb shank (ugh) in MDR they have leg of lamb on the buffet!

I can't stand the WMC cake. Should be called "bottle of Hershey's sauce". Playlist stinks.

DJ is WAY too loud.

No umbrellas on Serenity except on Fantasy class.

No more mints at turndown.

No more toiletries--I know they are provided by vendors but what happened? Not enough new trivia questions.

No 7 day ship in Tampa.

Orange!!!!!! Change it already in the cabins.

I love Guy's, better than 5 brothers or whatever it's called by far. Great side bar add ons.

If you have a good CD it's great, like Butch.

I also look at gambling as entertainment expense. I allocate so much money and that's my limit and either I win or lose, but it was fun playing. The "free" cabin is a nice gift from the casino as are the free drinks in the casino, although I don't drink a lot, chocolate dipped strawberries and wine and other items they have sent me. I appreciate it all!

As to the chocolate melting cake, I was on Magic last week and I found out exactly what they are doing wrong that has caused the wide variety of results on the Chocolate Melting Cake we've all experienced. Normally chocolate melting cake in a land-based restaurant is essentially a soufflé that is not cooked all the way and must only be cooked for a precise amount of time and served quickly before it cooks through from the heat of the baking dish it is in. On Carnival they have to make these for hundreds if not thousands of people a night. So what they are doing is essentially making a soufflé and trying to take it out of the oven before it is 100% cooked through with the varying results we've all seen - sometimes it is like soup, sometimes it is dry, sometimes the center is molten. It never seems to be the same.

There is, however, a simple solution:

The addition of the piece of frozen chocolate truffle would guarantee a more uniform product with a molten center every time.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/chocolate-truffle-cake-recipe0.html

The other thing I noticed about the chocolate melting cake recipe is that they are not using any other flavoring agents in the chocolate melting cake. No vanilla extract or even salt. The addition of these two items would greatly improve the flavor of the recipe, IMO.

I also think the pizza is overrated. I like the crust and the fact that it is made essentially to order, but the sauce is rather generic and ho hum and doesn't really make the most of the very nice crust.

The worst things on the cruise, IMO are the art auction (No WAY would I go to that) and the overpriced jewelry in the jewelry store with the so-called "sales" during the cruise. Just a rip off. I looked at one pair of earrings for over $300 and found an identical pair at Sam's for $79. The cruise lines need to wake up and realize that in this age of the internet, most people know how to find out what jewelry really costs, can find the exact same pieces that are on the ship on the internet and are not going to get ripped off with the cruise line's inflated prices. I guess once in a while they get some person who is naive to buy something, but wouldn't it be smarter to offer real bargains where lots of people who want to and are able buy lots of jewelry per cruise? JMO.

Depends on the comedians. Some you can tell have no family friendly material and are terrible. Others are funnier when they have to stretch themselves by not relying on sex and cussing.
