Vero Beach to Fort Lauderdale

We are driving from Davenport to Fort Lauderdale next weekend and spending one night pre-cruise there. We're thinking of going a day earlier and stopping somewhere between Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale. We would take 27 south to 60 in Lake Wales and go east to the coast. Haven't made this drive before so where would you spend the night and why? What is best thing to see or do?

Thank you!

Linda

Palm Beach is about halfway between Vero Beach and Port Everglades. The Breakers Hotel is the most famous there, as it is a grand historic hotel on the beach, but it is quite pricey. The hotels by the PBI airport are more reasonable. Some places to visit there are:

Clematis St restaurants

Worth Avenue shopping (it's very upscale but fun to see anyway)

Flagler Museum

Stop at the Breakers Hotel for a look-around and a drink. Valet parking is $25, but spend $25 in the shops/bar/restaurant, and they will validate your ticket.

There are several nice hotels in the Fort Pierce area around I-95 and the Turnpike exits with plenty of restaurants in the immediate area as well. The hotels here would be more inexpensive, I would think, that the West Palm Beach area.

If one is not tired of driving, a trip out to South Hutchinson Island will also take you to some nice restaurants with an ocean view.

On North Hutchinson Island, there is an interesting U. S. Navy Seals museum that is easy to get to find.
