2paradise Posted September 1, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 1, 2015 HI I seem to remember on our past couple of cruises we bought snorkel equip for $5 or so directly from Carnival as we were getting off the ship at certain ports. Does Carnival still do that? If so what is the price? Thanks!
snc_cam Posted September 1, 2015 #2 Share Posted September 1, 2015 when I was on the cruise in may, it was just the snorkel, not the mask for $5 at the Shore Excursions desk
danacline Posted September 1, 2015 #3 Share Posted September 1, 2015 For $5, maybe rent snorkel equipment. I bought my own, and I think the mask was under $100, similar amount for fins, snorkel maybe $20. I do know that any tour you might take that involves snorkeling will have all the necessary equipment. In those cases, many people bring their own snorkel since it goes in their mouths and they may not want to risk the snorkel tour group's sterilization procedures. If I am doing a snorkel excursion, I will take just mask and snorkel (I purchased a camera mask a year ago and love it) and not carry my fins which are bulky. But if I am doing a snorkel on my own, I will also carry my fins
Rare skittl1321 Posted September 1, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 1, 2015 Pretty much everyone in my family has this set: http://www.amazon.com/U-S-Divers-Airent-Snorkel-Black/dp/B00BUMDTQO/ref=sr_1_2?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1441116633&sr=1-2&keywords=snorkel It's not fabulous (too big for my face, for instance- but it doesn't leak); but it will do okay. When I started diving I upgraded to a much nicer mask ($90...) but for a once a year snorkel outing- this was pretty good.
Budget Queen Posted September 1, 2015 #6 Share Posted September 1, 2015 As mentioned, Carnival does sell just the snorkels separately for $5. IF you are cruising out of Hawaii or Florida- actually the area Walmarts have good selections of snorkel gear. I suggest you buy your own. Sorry, but the "sanitation" on snorkel tours is grossly lacking. Many times, it involves all the snorkels dumped in a low soap garbage can. Water not changed, gear not rinsed- all kinds of spit swapping. I've have my own sets for 20 years. It's a wonderful activity that I enjoy. 2paradise Posted September 1, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted September 1, 2015 Thanks for all of the help! I know we didn't rent it....it must have been just the snorkel I was thinking that we bought for $5 from the excursion desk. I was just looking for an inexpensive mask and snorkel that the kids could use from the beach. Nothing fancy. Thanks again!
tea4ular Posted September 1, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 1, 2015 We just went to Walmart & bought mask, and snorkel for $16 - no fins, but we don't mind using others fins, we just wanted to know that our snorkel and masks were clean and in good condition. I totally agree for the average joe blow like me this is plenty good for as often as I snorkel.

Budget Queen Posted September 1, 2015 #11 Share Posted September 1, 2015 The "soak" has bleach in it...they are sanitized..... You've got to be kidding? Sorry, but to actually "sanitize" anything- it has to be rinsed and cleaned from the inside, one by one. You think a splash of "bleach", which I don't see being used- ( too much risk with contact)- is enough, with a garbage can, packed with snorkels? So glad you posted this- I have had this in my cart for about a month but will purchase now. The ones they let you use on excursions kinda gross me out. Thanks! vamartha Posted September 1, 2015 #13 Share Posted September 1, 2015 We carry a kit similar to the one linked. I just like being able to get straight into the water in equipment I'm familiar with. I even went ahead and got snorkel vests last year. Less time on the beach and more time in the water with the fishies! :D
mousey Posted September 3, 2015 #14 Share Posted September 3, 2015 (edited) We've done it both ways. In the beginning we brought along our own equipment but when they started limiting the amount your suitcases can weigh we stopped doing that. We've been using various tours' snorkeling equipment for years now and have never had any problems whatsoever and have never gotten sick in any way from using them. I never knew that Carnival sells snorkels for $5. Always good to learn something new.:D Edited September 3, 2015 by mousey

I last cruised in 2010...so I wasn't aware of this. What's the limit - 50 pounds per suitcase?

I am sure there is a weight limit at the port but there are no scales. Please remember that porters have to lift your bags as well.
