CruiseFuse Posted September 27, 2005 #1 Share Posted September 27, 2005 We are sailing on the Victory out of Miami in the middle of December. I am curious as to whether or not anyone else has sailed at that time of year to the Western Caribbean (Mexico, Cayman Isl., Jamaica) and if swimming on board and at ports of call is still viable then.
Capt_BJ Posted September 27, 2005 #2 Share Posted September 27, 2005 they are called tourists :p I've done lots of diving in the islands in the winter months. I have a well worn wetsuit. MrPete Posted September 27, 2005 #4 Share Posted September 27, 2005 We sailed to those stops in January of 1989, and found there was no difference in the heat. We swam, and wore shorts, but not to dinner.
BlueHerons Posted September 27, 2005 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2005 I've not cruised in December but I've been to various islands in December and yes, you will be able to swim.
CruiseFuse Posted September 27, 2005 Author #6 Share Posted September 27, 2005 Thanks for the info. My family is a blended one. Part of us from the south, part of us from the north. I guess some of us will be swimming and some of us will wear a sweater.:D
dlbaqua Posted September 27, 2005 #7 Share Posted September 27, 2005 We sailed out of Galveston last December. We swam on board and also in Cozumel, it was plenty warm enough.
Rare Timmys_mom Posted September 27, 2005 #8 Share Posted September 27, 2005 they are called tourists :p . . . . People from the north think the water is warm tho ... I went swimming in Lake Superior over Labor Day weekend. Anything south of Miami is considered year round swimming. Don't ya know.
AppleValleyCruisers Posted September 27, 2005 #9 Share Posted September 27, 2005 I went swimming in Lake Superior over Labor Day weekend. And I've done it prior to Memorial Days, being a Duluth boy. I am guessing it will be so warm that you won't even need a swim suit;)

CruiseFuse Posted September 28, 2005 Author #12 Share Posted September 28, 2005 When I first moved to Illinois (1 1/2 yrs. ago) from the South, my husband took me and his daughters to go swimming in Lake Michigan in July. The water temperature was 64 degrees. I quickly informed my new family that most people from the south don't remove their clothes outside in 64 degree temperatures and we call that the beginning or end of winter. They dragged me in the water and I turned blue. I think people from Minnesota will swim in anything warmer than an ice cube.
