Can anyone recommend a private or other tour operator to view a couple of the mansions in Newport, RI? I had a tour lined up but they just cancelled on me!! My cruise is leaving in 2 days. Would prefer not to have to stand in long lines if this is an option! Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

The Newport Visitor's Center is located a short walk from the pier. Turn left when you leave the tender pier. At the Center you can purchase tour tickets and then walk outside to the parking area to pick up a local bus that takes you to the mansions.

Personally, there's no need for a private guide. At the Breakers, you will receive a audio set to listen to detailed info about each room. When you complete your tour, walk to the street and there will be ample bus routes to take you to another mansion or back to the Visitor's Center.

JMO, but if you are only interested in visiting a couple of mansions, you don't need a tour to do it. All the popular mansions are on the same bus route (#67). The bus stop for the Breakers is across form its front gate. Rosecliff is about a ½ mile away.

If it is important to you to avoid waiting lines, get to the mansion as quickly as you can (by opening time). The Breakers is about the only mansion that would have a line at this time of the year.

Also, you could walk to the Breakers; distance is about 2.1 miles. An option would be a taxi. The taxi or bus can be found at the Newport Visitors' Center which is one block north from the tender dock.

TTBOMK, the only tour groups that can bypass a waiting line are those groups that arrive by tour bus.

In addition to the Visitor Center, some mansions have tickets for sale at the entry of the grounds.

And just a note...... trying to do more than one mansion in a day may be visual and factual overload. If choosing just one, the Breakers is the most opulent.

Leave time to wander around the town, perhaps see the historic synagogue, walk a bit of the Cliff Walk, have nice meal or a coffee, etc.

Excellent points. Tuoro Synagogue is a wonderful place to visit. An easy walk from the visitors center.

We love Newport, go there on our own every couple of years.

Cheers
