Booked cruise yesterday. Listed below medical conditions concerns for those in our party. I am most likely going to book insurance within the next 48 hours, but could use your input

Dad (60) - Issues w/heart (splint put in June 2014) and overall health

Brother (44) - Asthma

Daughter (15) - Asthma, Peanut, tree nut allergies

1 - I assume all of those conditions are considered preexisting, yes?

2- Shopped insuremytrip's website, its reasonable to insure us all but can you recommend any specific areas of coverage that we'd need based on those conditions above?

I don't really care about lost luggage (replaceable), doubt any of us would HAVE to cancel for work, etc.

Whats most important is that if someone were to injury themselves or have their asthma or allergy concerns flare up... getting good medical attention and transported back home as quick as possible.

I have been offered covered through our TA.. and requested to see whats covered. Insuremytrips packages offered are comparable. With my TA I need to book within 72 hours of deposit... others not sure how soon I'd need to book

Thoughts or recommendations?

Whether it's pre-existing or not depends on many factors including how stable the condition was during the "look back" period. If the condition was stable during that time than it wouldn't be pre-existing. Many of the policies on insuremytrip.com have a pre-existing condition waiver as long as you purchase the policy within the time frame specified (usually within two weeks of initial trip payment).

I would personally look for a policy that offers good medial coverage and good medical evacuation coverage (routine medevacs can run $30k plus). You can call the specialists at insuremytrip and they will help you choose a policy.

Most of the policies I've seen require insurance purchase within some short amount of time of initial booking to cover pre-existing conditions. I would also make sure you have sufficient emergency evac coverage.

First off,,, your profile doesn't say where you live.

Country or even province or State makes a huge difference.

Most important thing I can say is that if you are from the States,,, if you want to cover Pre-Existing Medical Conditions, then you must always purchase the insurance within a certain number of days of initial deposit. Some policies 24 hours, some policies 14 days, one policy is good for up to final payment.

Each policy is different.

I'm a Travelguard Gold fan but your needs may be different.

Note that with Travel Insurance, especially with pre-existing conditions,,,, you usually MUST cover your entire trip to include all non refundable costs.

Example:

You buy today.

Next month you decide to fly to port instead of drive. You don't tell the travel insurance company. Something goes wrong and you file a claim. Your insurance is no longer any good because you didn't cover all expenses.

Insurance is reimbursement only.

Have an asthma attack on the ship, the ships infirmary treats it and gets you going again,,,, you pay out of pocket,,, then file for reimbursement

Break a leg on shore,,, same thing.

Something major,,,, insurance MAY help pay immediately.

Miss the ship???, flying to the next port to catch the ship comes out of your pocket,,, then you file for reimbursement.

The insurance wouldn't cover the flight if anything went wrong but the cruise portion would still be covered. At least that's the way that I understand it.

Depending on the policy and provider flights can be included . It's all a matter of what's important to the individual and what they're wanting to pay for insurance.

I am a transplant recipient and always buy insurance because you never know when my system will go off kilter. The look back and timing issues are critical as even a transplant is not considered pre existing (from an insurability perspective-- it surely is a pre existing condition in fact) if you are stable (no change in meds and/or health status ) in the look back period (3 months?)

I also favor travelguard but just because they have competitive rates on all types (including cancel for any reason) of travel Ins

Yes, but in the example given by the PP the flights were not included in the original coverage because they were added later. I read that post as saying that because the flight wasn't included if something went wrong with the cruise the policy would not pay out, which is not how I understand how it works.

The look back period varies by provider, some use 3 months, some up to 9. It's always important to know this when deciding which policy to purchase.

My DH is paraplegic and I am always very aware of the insurance issues. There is an insurance forum here on the forum.

I have done a lot of research and found that for us TravelEx is the best. We just insured a trip for medical only. TravelEx is one of the few that let you do that. Just enter ZERO as the cost of the trip. Also, they have a much higher evacuation limit than others. People who have made claims with them have rated them top knotch.

IMHO, get evac coverage for $50k+.

With some searching (and higher fee) you can find policies that cover pre-existing conditions even if you don't purchase the policy shortly after the first payment is made, as long as you're before final payment.

You can also find policies that do not require you to pay out-of-pocket then get reimbursed.

Know what is important to you, and call the nice people at insuremytrip. They have access to a huge database of insurance companies and policies, and can help you find the policy that matches your requirements.
