We are here for 1 1/2 days, so we rented a car for the first day, and will be walking around near where we tender in at Nawiliwili the next day. Any suggestions as to what we should drive to visit on the first day? Also, anything interesting nearby within walking distance the second day?

You don't actually tender in Kauai. The ship docked in harbor.

Check out Trip Advisor for top Kauai attractions and Things To Do to give you some idea of the possibilities. A drive to the uppermost lookout in Waimea Canyon comes to mind. Or a drive to the North Shore near Hanalie Bay and the start of the Na Pali Coast.

I agree with the other poster who mentioned a helicopter tour. This is one of the top two things I have ever done on a cruise or ever. In fact, I'd probably rate it number 1. Bucket worthy. Book Direct to save a significant amount over the cruise line excursion. Book the earliest tour of the day you can as visibility can decrease as the day goes on. Book with one who picks up at the ship. You can get the rental car after. Or you could do one first thing on your 1/2 day.

Only thing to walk to in Kauai I am aware of is the shopping area which fronts Kalapaki Bay and beach. There is a shuttle or it is about a 2 block walk via sidewalk. Very nice tree shaded beach with vendors and restaurants. You can sit at the Mariott at Dukes beachfront bar for drinks or lunch. Walk inside. There is a beautiful botanical garden courtyard with ponds, waterfalls and wildlife which existed before the hotel was even built.

Main thing to remember is that there is no road that goes all the way around the island, also don't get caught in rush hour around Kapa'a:)

That is very true !

During the winter hours you can not do both dead end trips in the same day

and expect to SEE THE SIGHTS.

Make sure you have an early departure on each day to maximize the viewing opportunities !

Suggest do the Poipu Waimea Canyon Kalalau Lookout trip the first day and the

Wailua Fern Grotto Kilaueau Lighthouse Princeville Hanalei Bay * trip the following day.

* extending this trip to Haena roads end optional with time and weather.

Remember however these are both dead end trips and the further you go

you will have to come back the same distance. Not so bad on the first day

but on the second with port call and getting back on board the ship returning

the rent-a-car can be troublesome.

Both are pretty much an even mileage trip but the sights on the first day are

IMHO more demanding of time and photo ops.

Weather of course can change these plans to the reverse - beware Kauai is

perhaps the wettest spot on earth the rain fall on Mt. Waialeale exceeds 450

inches annually. The Waimea Canyon viewing thus can be spotty at best

during the winter months. The dry season is September and October.

The Hawaii Visitors Bureau has tons of reading material and literature to

make your plans.

One neat point is that viewing the Kalalau Lookout and then later on the

NCL POA you will see the cliffs of Na Pali from the opposite sea angle.

Enjoy this island stop - everything is doable with planning and weather co-operation !
