Wonderful!!! Now the smokers have their small area like the non smokers use to have. This is good for everyone...smokers can still smoke, non smokers can enjoy the casino and MORE IMPORTANTLY, non smokers can enjoy the area around and above the casino.

Right now it is apparently not planned for the older ships, but write to Mr. Stuart and Mr. Del Rio asking them to reconsider.

 

 

It is most likely an issue with casino square footage on the older ships. And the inability to install the air cleaners that would do the job. And, a matter of the economics for such a conversion.

I'm actually surprised that NCL (other than Celebrity) is taking an active approach addressing this issue.

 

It's been my experience that the casinos on NCL are among the smokiest at sea. Other than feeling that their suites were a bit overpriced, this is one thing which kept me from booking again with NCL... and that's even with discounts which their casino offers.

 

I'll have to look a bit closer at the Escape now. The fact that this is not going to change anything on the smaller ships is a non-issue to me, as I have zero interest is any of their pre-Epic ships! Been on the Pearl and Sky (a couple of times), and they're just dated/worn/tired IMO.

Seems like the decision to make a separate enclosed smoking area should make both smokers and nonsmokers happy. Both get what they want.

 

Non-smokers who now invade the smokers area are now chastised, and pretty much told if you don't like it leave. Now that smokers are going to be confined to what is probably going to be a smaller space than before (virtually the entire casino with a few machines for nonsmokers) it will be interesting to see how happy they are and how many of the smokers (although they now cannot smoke) invade the non-smoking areas to have access to more machines, tables, and more space. Trust me.....we non-smokers know how you feel.

That's what I have been saying all along. The smoking section of the Breakaway is always packed, non smoking side.....eh not so much

 

Why do I get the feeling that it's more about keeping the Non Smokers in the casino vs keeping the Smokers. After all, the casinos were already largely Smoking, and the smokers were all happy, so why spend big money to enclose them? The only unhappy people were the non smokers who would like to gamble and draw a breath of fresh air at the same time.

 

Because, as limmie says, the smoking side was packed and the non smoking (smokey) side, not so packed. So, IMO, they are hoping that by enclosing the smokers, many non smokers who refused to enter, or couldn't take it long in there, will return and spend more time and money.

 

And, I think they tired of the "stinky ship" reputation they got from complaints about the smoke smell that permeated the atrium area.

It will be interesting to see where they put this new enclosed area. I can only reference Getaway. Wasn't there an area off to one side that had card tables? It always struck me it wasn't ever full and on the opposite side of the restaurant on the deck below.

 

The main complaint will likely be about the choices available in the new confined area. On other ships I've ventured to non smoking slots to get variety, but don't always stay there long.

It will be interesting what the find out when they see the new smoking section on the Escape. Will they see a lot of smokers crammed in there or will they see a small amount of people. I think what they do see, will have an impact as to what we might see on the smaller ships in the future. If they see that there are very few smokers, then I would venture to guess that they might go non-smoking on the ships that they won't be retrofitting.

 

What I do like, is that it will not just be an open section on the Escape, but a walled off room, which should corral the smoke in that area. I do, however, feel sorry for the crew members who have to work in there.

Great compromise! I hope it works out. In the spirit of elevating cleanliness & quality of space (per Mr. Del Rio in his recent USA Today interview/article), cleaning up the air we breathe is imperative. Seriously. On the Getaway when we walked past the atrium just as you got by the guest services area the stale smell would pick up. The air carries it so far. Very off-putting.

That is because non smoking sections are still smoky so people who are bothered by it stay away.

 

Now NCL's casino revenue will increase and the atria won't smell like smoke. The gaming industry is in decline because healthy people won't sit in a pit of smoke for hours. In ten years most Vegas casinos will be smoke free as smoking rates continue to decline.

Personally, I don't think it's about the non-smokers in the casino, but more about the non-smokers in the other venues like the Atrium or Le Bistro. Let's be honest, the smoke is so bad at times, it reaches O'Sheenan's, La Cucina and the Speigel Theater. High rollering smokers in the casino are important but so are non-smokers that are buying stuff like dining in the decks 678 too - can't alienated neither group.

Bravo Ncl. I'm buying another cruise credit.

 

 

It's not going to be two casinos they are just going to enclose the smoking side with possibly making it smaller. It will still be just one casino.

Yep, that's what I said. But your first statement above would make more sense if it said "proves there is financial gain to keep 'gamblers' in a casino" rather than "smokers". This change is not about the smokers. The casino was already full of them. This change is about making the non smoking gamblers happy, as well as non smokers throughout the central areas of the ship.
