jbrambach Posted September 29, 2005 #2 Share Posted September 29, 2005 cruise6, you should put a warning label on this post.....something to the effect of "WARNING, pics could cause massive nausea, reccomend dramine before viewing". But seriously, very scary, would not have wanted to be in those seas.

Pam in CA Posted September 29, 2005 #4 Share Posted September 29, 2005 I believe they off-loaded all of the non-essential people before heading out to sea.

MaryPoppinz Posted September 29, 2005 #7 Share Posted September 29, 2005 If you cruise in hurricane season, this isn't something you wanna see! http://community.webshots.com/photo/463051526/463053409kbvMHQ
Globaliser Posted September 29, 2005 #8 Share Posted September 29, 2005 Who took those pictures, and what were they on?They were taken by a crew member on Sensation. Both of these ships were chartered to FEMA, and put out to the safety of the open sea from their temporary homes in New Orleans. Personally, I'd have loved to have done this. This is real sailing weather - none of this namby-pamby millpond stuff. :D
MaryPoppinz Posted September 29, 2005 #9 Share Posted September 29, 2005 I've been at sea in a typhoon. I prefer namby-pamby. :)
MNYTRPS2GO2 Posted September 30, 2005 #10 Share Posted September 30, 2005 Our very first cruise was during a category 4 hurricane. The reason I never cruised prior to this was I had suffered from motion sickness my whole life. My family convinced me I'd be fine so I gave in and it was quite a ride! Bonine and I became best friends during that trip...
Rare Coral Posted September 30, 2005 #11 Share Posted September 30, 2005 Oh my! Thanks for posting. We sailed once during a hurricane (need to look up what category now that I know more about hurricanes) and it was awful the first night. We then were able to sail out of it. ---- I just looked it up and it was Hurricane Lenny and a Cat 4.. Thankfully we sailed out of it. I went out that first night and it felt like a hail storm in the middle of winter....
Druke I Posted September 30, 2005 #12 Share Posted September 30, 2005 Like MaryPoppinz above, I have been at sea during a typhoon - and it can get pretty rough. We had green water over the bridge, screws out of the water, and the inclinometer was pegged several times, aboard the little Golden Odyssey, a 10,000GRT liner, in the China Sea. It was rough!! (And I have to admit - a bit scary.)

Kruznut Posted September 30, 2005 #15 Share Posted September 30, 2005 Wow ! These pictures are incredible. But I must admit I would rather be numbered amongst the namby pamby !

Mlascheid Posted October 1, 2005 #17 Share Posted October 1, 2005 Any idea of how high the seas were?? It is an awesome sight and I'm sure QUITE an experience to see Mother Nature in all her glory...but I think I'd end up with the Mamby-Pamby's as well. DannyMac Posted October 1, 2005 #18 Share Posted October 1, 2005 Cool pics!!! Reminds me of some of the WWII stories my dad told me about. He was assigned to the Navy Armed guard on a tanker bound for Russia. The ships of his era were a lot smaller than a cruise ship.
Iamthesea Posted October 1, 2005 #19 Share Posted October 1, 2005 I would have been scared out of my wazooy! My DS would love it. Hope this doesn't happen to us on our Coral cruise in....

Those pics scared the c-...  well, you know out of me until I realized that the ships were staged out to sea to ride out the storm. I will be piloting that namby pamby ship, thank you very much. Two weeks left until we hit the high seas....I'm gonna start praying to the hurricane Gods right now !!!! FitzLA Posted October 1, 2005 #24 Share Posted October 1, 2005 I believe they off-loaded all of the non-essential people before heading out to sea. There were 550 crew members and 100 passengers from New Orleans that were residing on the ship.
spiritkat090909 Posted October 2, 2005 #25 Share Posted October 2, 2005 My first cruise was during Hurricane Marilyn, Cat 3. I thought it felt like the ship might have been making similar moves, but not quite that deep! Since we were hitting the waves head on, not much seasickness and really fun to go to sleep with the rocking. We were on the RCCL Sovereign in a suite & St. Thomas was bypassed for St. Croix. On the other hand, though... went on a small 25k ton ship w/Commodore cruise lines during 'normal' conditions.. 9 foot swells at an up/down/criss cross angle... and EVERYONE was sick, crew included. No hurricane in sight. Don't know that I would want to experience a Cat 4... but...3 was fun. Great pics! Sharing with the family...:D
