Oasis of the Seas - smoking on balcony

Recommended Posts

Smoking on balcony is just another rule that people break or assume they do not have to follow. How many times do we hear..

How to smuggle drinks on the ship

Chair hogs that believe they can hold the chair all day

People assuming they can buy one drink package and share

People bringing travel companion to the diamond lounge who are not diamond

Finally a reason to own a selfie stick -- to snap photos of balcony violators!

Yea, I can see it now. Some pervert using a selfie stick trying to take pics of possibly topless women on their balcony and then claim that he smelled smoke and thought they were violating the smoking ban.

The same type of people who waste money buying cigarettes. ;)

The same could be said then for people buying cruises, buying meals out, alcohol, etc.....

Paying for a comfort for one person could be seen as a waste for someone else. Not the same as flushing money down the toilet (not talking about eating) by paying for a product they don't use.

Spout that load of poo in the smoking area and your cruise will be the only one ruined. ;)

Poo is what balcony-smoking-guy might find dropped in his personal "smoking area" if his toxins float into my airspace. 😝

We had a next door neighbor on Navigator who was smoking on her balcony. We smelled it when we were out there a couple of times. I did call guest services after a few times since it is not allowed. I never smelled a person smoking out there again.

If you read the post I quoted and then my post, you'll notice I stated nothing about breaking rules. The previous posted spoke of spouting his gibberish in authorized smoking areas. If you decide to bring your "poo" to an authorized smoking area and start flinging it I'm sure you would be joining the other poster in the "ruined cruise" category.

On my JOTS sailing last month, the first time I walked out to my balcony, I looked down the railing and a woman was puffing away with her smoking arm leaning over the railing. When she spotted me looking at her, she jerked back out of eyesight and I heard a door close. What she did after that, I don't know, but I never saw her smoking again. And I spent ALOT of time on my balcony.

Oddly, I never smelled smoke, even when I saw her smoking.

I highly doubt anyone would actually fling poo at a smoker. I'm pretty sure the post was in jest.

Actually you present a very valid point. How many times do I read-eh-they don't really enforce that rule. Some smokers will test this one too.

Thanks for your constructive feedback.

Why is my post history being reviewed? What I posted in the past is irrelevant since I mentioned specifically I was on the Oasis.

And to the individual who kindly asked what I wanted from CC, I can simply state the purpose of my thread was to share my experience on the Oasis and to see where I can forward my complaint as I did not receive satisfaction on board.

I really would like to extent my gratitude to those who actually read my post and provided me with the contact info. Much obliged.

I will no longer address queries made in this thread; I find no purpose in responding to rudeness.

Again, thanks again to those who helped!

Ignore the snarky remarks. You are doing a service posting about your experience with smoking on Oasis. If enough people complain RCI will do something. I've heard of smokers being asked to leave the ship for repeated smoking violations.

So I guess I'll come to the defense of the OP. I'll tell you what CC can do about it, it can get the word out. My wife is very sensitive to smoke. I know most people can't relate to that, but it's a fact. In fact, I can't even relate to it. However, we have, more than once, been unable to enjoy our balcony, a balcony that I also paid an upcharge for, because someone was smoking. Now, we understood it was legal, so we simply didn't use our balcony when people were smoking in a balcony around us. But Royal Caribbean is now non-smoking. I don't care why they are, but they are. So now we should expect a smoke free balcony. When someone chooses to violate the rules, we are the ones that are inconvenienced. So, Cruise Critic is a good forum to put that out. If you are a smoker, and you believe, as one poster stated, that there is just so much moving air on a balcony, that no one will smell your smoke, sorry to burst your selfish little bubble, but that just isn't what happens. So it's easy, all you Cruise Critic readers, obey the rules and don't smoke on your balcony. You can enjoy the balcony without smoking, I can't enjoy mine if you decide the rules don't apply to you.

So, how's that? Is that a good reason as to what the OP "wants CC to do about it?"

EXACTLY. Also, might I add to those same people who think "no one will care/notice if I smoke on my balcony because the smoke will dissipate" would they feel comfortable lighting up in the MDR? If not, then why do they think it is okay to smoke in a "NO SMOKING" area on their balcony????? SMDH

That is supposedly Royal's policy. First offense you get a warning, second offense you end your cruise at the next port, with no free way home. Also, if there is any evidence that smoking occurred in the cabin a healthy cleaning fee is added to their sea pass account. Stupidity, ignorance and arrogance come with a price sometimes.

That is one report I have heard, can't confirm, but don't doubt. But like other things RC sometimes isn't consistent ship to ship. While I have never been greatly bothered by a balcony smoker when it was allowed, I did see an amusing incident on board Allure in 2013. Back then the balcony at the end of deck 12 was still public space. We spent some time relaxing out there and a smoker came out, I am assuming from a nearby cabin 50% chance it was a balcony cabin to smoke in that area. He was a considerate smoker in the sense that he went to an area away from us. With the wind it didn't bother us, but I got a big chuckle when he finished his cigarette, flicked it into the ocean (Hopefully, not knowing for sure where it landed.) He looked up as he did this suddenly realizing he was staring directly in to a camera. Now I don't know if anyone was monitoring that camera or even noticed, but he sure did vacate the area quickly!

To the best of my Knowledge this is completely factual. I remember when the policy went into effect. I don't remember hearing from anyone who did get fined. I'm sure there has been one, but I guess nobody would admit to it. They old towel policy comes to mind, " I returned it" (I didn't smoke)

Screw smokers! I don't give a duck that they have fewer & fewer places to cancer-up. I don't want to breathe that crap, and the idea that they have the "right" to pollute the air I breathe, "smoking area" or not is farg'n BS! Man, if I ever found myself in the unfortunate position as the OP, having to endure cancer guy's filth, I'll make sure I'm not the only one whose cruise is ruined!

I'm not going to comment on whether I think OP is lying or not, but it should be noted that OP is only doing a service by posting this if the story is, in fact true.

The internet is a great place for witch hunts to get started because people tend to believe OP's automatically, and more than a few people have taken advantage of that un-earned trust to stir up trouble.

It *is* curious why OP would have previously posted that she was sailing on an entirely different ship. It is also curious why OPs experience on Oasis is so different from that of many other people - personally the only place I've ever smelled cigarettes on Oasis was the one time I wandered into the casino my first day on the ship while exploring. I've also never experienced anything but exemplary service on Oasis, and so the conclusion from OP's story is that if it's true, Oasis has completely changed its customer service model and is now a floating Motel 6. This is a little hard to swallow (though I will be finding out early next year and will be happy to post back if, indeed, service is now terrible on that ship).

OP may very well be telling the truth. Only OP can know that. But since we cannot confirm the story and since OP's own posting history has created questions which point to potential holes in her story, it would be unwise to try to start a movement against RCCL to get them to change their ways since we don't know if, in fact, their ways need to be changed.

Check-plus & smiley face ☺ for "between-the-lines" reading skills.

I mentioned this in another thread - if someone passed gas in front of others, that is rude, yet it's OK to have others endure one's 2nd hand smoke? (Forget about "smoking area", we all know that's a joke when the smoke can leave said "area".)

So here's my problem with OP and all the smoking threads.

Everyone ignores the fact that the ship is burning cheap diesel that wouldn't be allowed to be burned anywhere else in the continental US because of all the crap that comes out of the exhaust. If the relatively small amount of cigarette smoke you are "attacked" by bothers you so much how in the world DOESN'T the exhaust from the ship effect you the same way. How do you board the cruise ship in the first place thru the haze of diesel exhaust around the ship caused by the ship itself and the multitudes of semi's and buses emptying and reloading it on a weekly basis?

BRAVO!!!!!!!

I have learned that things can become illogical when drug addicts are threatened with reduced access to the substance they crave.

Tobacco is an addictive recreational drug. Probably the most dangerous one used and very addictive.

It is best to be careful how you deal with these issues. I do make polite requests for smokers to cease when they are doing so illegally and often get immediate threats of violence.

Never did find out the penalties till now.

I dont smoke, but just curious.

Thanks for posting.

Safe travels.

How did she know it was coming from a balcony 3 or 4 down? Were all balcony dividers open? How did she get such a description of the "big man" and how they were fighting ? Just how potent could the smoke be that many balconies away especially if they were at sea?

She did say ", a neighbour 3 to 4 balconies away smoked frequently on their balcony. I caught them smoking on two occasions" so she must have been able to see them

I am assuming that you are probably a smoker, but that may not be the case. You just may not realise how debilitating tobacco smoke can be to someone who has an acute sensitivity. I can feel unwell when following the car of a smoker on a highway that is over 100m in front at 100kph. So a few balconies away with a sea breeze is very believable and probably one reason that RCI have banned smoking there.
