Caribbean Princess Still at Dock Houston

What is the sail time from Belieze to Cozamel? I would expect that you might have gotten there for a short visit, same with Costa Maya, except that bad weather was expected to hit Houston and the ship was expecting to having to return early and make port the evening before scheduled arrival.

The other point to consider is that the same front that was causing the wind in Belieze may have also been impacting Costa Maya (I have been there when waves were breaking over the pier and ships had problems getting in due to wind.)

and Cozamel.

I just checked it out. As a bird flies Belieze City is 210 miles from Cozamel.

The ship cannot sail that direct route, since it crosses land. so the ships route is significantly longer. At 20 knots the direct route would take 9 hours, so considering the longer course around the land and reefs it is probably more like 12-15 hours. That would fit with a normal schedule of a ship traveling overnight between the two, leaving one at 5 and getting into the other at 7-8 am. Considering the need for the early arrival in Houston, probably not enough time for a port stop there, even if there was room and weather was good.

Looking at the reported status of Costa Maya on December 25, there were three ships in port that day. That is the maximum they can handle. This would have been the day that the CB could have called on the port after having not been able to enter the harbor in Belize the day before.

There were 6 ships in Cozumel on December 25. Three were Carnival ships which used Puerto Maya and two RCCL ships which used the International pier which put both at capacity. Disney was at Puerto Langusto. The 6 ships carried 20,429 pax which would have pretty well taken all the shore excursion capacity.

Distance from Belize to Costa Maya is 87 nautical miles. Belize to Cozumel is 203 NM and from Cozumel to Houston is 697 NM. The ship's practical top speed is around 20 knots. A strong wind will reduce that speed. The ship with its large flat side surface is like a giant sail.

I am not sure where the CB could have gone after the aborted attempt to enter the harbor in Belize and give the pax time to go ashore for any practical length of time.

If our Jan 24 sailing is delayed I would be thrilled to go back to Costa Maya. I would immediately try to get a reservation at Maya Chan or Alma Plena. We took the Emerald in Jan 2015 and specifically picked the week they did Costa Maya. Best port of the entire cruise!

Thanks for breaking out your compass and protractor there Sat. The facts are we that we passed Cozumel at 6pm on Thursday after traveling at 10-12 knots all day after aborted Belieze call. On the previous two sailings CB left Coz on Friday and was still docked late Saturday night as opposed to Sunday Morning as scheduled.

You folks enabling these poor decisions do understand your are encouraging more of them, right?

Due to their late departure from Bayport, the CB is bypassing Costa Maya and continuing their cruise to Roatan and Belize. The captain has secured a stop in Cozumel for Friday however. Hopefully they will be able to get into port in Mahogany Bay and Belize City.

Thanks for breaking out your compass and protractor there Sat.

One would typically use a pair of dividers to measure distance on

a chart.

Dividers have two sharp points.

A compass has a sharp point and a pencil, and is used to draw circles.

As Mr. Sat didn't post any heading information, he would not have

needed to use a protractor.

Although, typically one would use a set of parallel rules to lay out a course, not a protractor.

Or you could just go by past experience and keep all that paraphernalia in the drawer.

I had to look up what hogmanay meant. So happy new year.

The CB is in Belize right now so they were able to make the tender port. Hopefully the CB will see better luck now. We live near the Bayport/Galveston seaports and use them every year. We sail in February.

CB is on its way to Cozumel and the last port of call. The weather in Houston is looking really good with cool temperature, normal humidity and low wind, so there should not be any problems this Sunday. Let us hope.
