Walkie talkies OK to use?

I got this question from another thread, and interested in what people from Carnival had to say:

Are walkie talkies appropriate on Carnival ships?

I think yes, for security reasons with family members.

I am prepared for lots of responses as this is a hot topic.

By all means use them. We used them when we took our Grandsons on the Inspiration last Jan. and agin in March. There are some dead spots on the ship where you get bad reception but for the most part they worked great.

There are those that think they don't belong on a cruise. If used with proper consideration of your follow passengers IMHO they are OK. We used 5watt motorolas with thier own charging station. Have a great cruise.

We have also used them and sometimes they worked and other times not. When we were on the Paradise our cabin was on Main deck forward and they worked perfectly, from any location on the ship. When we were the first time on the Inspiration though, same class ship as Paradise, it did not work down to the Riviera deck mid-ship cabin. My DH used to work for Motorola and he had top of the line units, too. Next year also on Inspiration, we were in aft Upper deck cabin and had no problems. Did hear that some people had problems especially with lower end units. Moral of the story is: keep in mind where your cabin is and don't buy cheap units. You can also rent them on the ship, but not sure how much they run.

YES! We use them as well. Our kids don't want to be with us 24/7, but I want to be able to get in touch with them at all times. As stated above, they don't always work, but we found that they did the majority of the time. BTW, don't use them in the casino otherwise they think you're cheating :p .

You must remember that FRS radios/walkies are fine to use in the U.S. and its territories. When you travel abroad you need to know what frequencies are actually usable without a license. You could be in violation of certain countries telecommunications laws. I really do not think it would be a problem unless you were disruptive to some service that was on the same frequency, but you never know.

I used them with my 14 year old when we cruised... Letting him have independence and know where he is , is my first concern . I am sorry if some

don't like the use of them, however I will and have always used them.

We keep them turned and speak low when on them. I am not sure what

you mean by intrusive, I don't find them that way at all....

IMO they aren't appropriate for ANY ship. But whatever floats your boat. My only problem is that some of the folks I've seen haven't been very respectful to others when using them.

Sorry...but for "security reasons"...please. I think too many people try and use these for safety nets...or an electronic babysitter. *shakes head*

Some people maybe. However I think most mothers and fathers know the limit. My son knows he must answer when I call him or he will be with us the remainer of the cruise and he has never been disruptive to others around

him. I quess I have a special one (son) . You know your children and I know mine. I would never let anything take the place of my eyes and ears. I would say 75% of the time he is with us. The other 25% he will have the walkie talkie. If we were on land he would have his phone.

I don't use them, but don't mind them. I am more scared of the fact that cell phones will soon be useable on cruise ships. Dreading the day when a bunch of loud mouths all call home to tell the world where they are right now. :(

This subject is kind of like the smoking on board topic:

- They are both okay by the cruiselines.

- They will both annoy 'some' of your fellow cruisemates.

It's funny that some of the very people who think smoking in your face is their right are the same ones who think 2-way radios should be thrown overboard.

Be respectful and tell your children to be respectful... I have not noticed it being a problem with adults (other than when the kid wants to call every 2 minutes)... it's the kids that seem to abuse them, as they figure out how to use them with the other kids on the ship, and then it is a walkie talkie frenzy... doesn't bother me terribly, but there are appropriate places to use them and if both parties know this, shouldn't be a problem.

this is exactly where the problem begins.. we will be sitting in a show with a group of teens behind us having loud conversations with their new found friends.

I think the walkie talkes are a great idea..as long as they are used for the intended purpose.

Also-- MOm & dad-- pick another name- you will be surprised on how many kids are screaming into the things for Mom or Dad to pickup.

Last cruises we used the voice mail on the cabins telephone. Worked for me as I wasnt advertisiing where I was gonna be in half an hour

Many of the newer Nextel and Southern Linc phones come equipped with off network walkie talkie capability up to 6 miles. Other models may have a downloadable app for about 20 dollars. If you have this you won't need to buy separate radios. Just use what you have. You can check with your carrier if in doubt.

The primary benefit of using walkie talkies is faster communication, not safety. While it is highly unlikely that anything will happen to your child on a cruise ship, do not be lulled into thinking that a child wandering around the ship out of your view is "safer" because they have one. It would be the first thing snatched out of their hand. Nothing substitutes for the safety of being physically with a supervising adult.

So cell phones WON'T work, correct? I really hope not, otherwise my husband will be making business calls instead of relaxing! Although it'll kill him to not be able to check the Astros score every 5 minutes. LOL!

not at all.. LOL- i did have the newer nextel since the guy told me it would work on the ship. the reason we got them is for the direct connext. yeah right-- a ship needs a tower in order for you to get service--no tower no service.

Hey , like I said , you know your child. Mine would never be rude in a show.

He does not even like to talk on it. But he knows he must answer me when I call. I never would replace my own eyes and ears with a set of them. I want to know where he is at all times. Plus it will save a lot of time when

I call him for dinner or to meet me . We use them in that way.

I thought the same thing when I read the comment about giving their kids walkie talkies for security. Remember the lovely young woman in Minnesota (could be wrong on the state) who was talking to her boyfriend on her cell at the moment she was abducted? She was murdered soon thereafter. The cell phone only alerted her boyfriend to the fact that something was wrong; it did absolutely nothing to protect her.
