Zaandam internet

As you head south down the coast of South America, the angle toward the Internet satellite will become more and more severe. That will result in slow, spotty, and sometimes no, service. Service will return/improve as you head back up the other side of the continent.

While scenic cruising the fjords of Chile you are likely to lose service for a time, even though it will work when back out to open sea.

For some reason I don't know, there were times we lost TV coverage while laptops were working.

We did not buy Internet on our trip around the Horn on the Zaandam, but we spent A LOT of time in the library adjacent to the cafe -- which is the room with the ship's computers. It was non-stop stream of people complaining to the staff member manning the desk there, and we could observe people sitting, watching and watching the hourglass tumble. Then they would get up and join the line to complain about being cut off!

The reason is as Ruth said -- the communication satellites all orbit near the equator (that's why all "dishes" in the northern hemisphere point south). So the farther south (OR north!) you go, the harder it is for the antennae to keep a fix on a satellite.

We did have with us an UltraBook and my Samsung Note3 (phablet) -- and even internet at pubs and cafes from Puerto Montt south was very flaky. I had T-mobile coverage from Santiago to Valparaiso and the wifi at Buenos Aires airport was good. The rest of the time, not so much.
