49erfan007 Posted January 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 9, 2016 If I wanted to gamble, and didn't have any cash, but used my on-board account would it be charged as a purchase, or would it be charged to my credit card as a cash advance? I was just wondering b/c a cash advance carries a very high interest rate on my card, but I have 0% for purchases. I realize I have to pay NCL 3%, but I'm more curious about how it gets charged to my credit card
luvcruzing Posted January 9, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 9, 2016 Charged as a purchase on your on-board account.
MeHeartCruising Posted January 9, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) Just shows up as "Casino Charge" or something like that on your cabin account. For me, a separate charge showed up for the 3% fee. You then pay for it with the rest of your charges at the end of the cruise in whatever manner you settle your bill. CalLuvsCrusingToo Posted January 10, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 10, 2016 Is there an advantage to doing this, vs. using the ship ATM? I get reimbursed by my bank for ATM usage, so doesn't cost me anything. Just wondering if theres a perk I don't know about for getting casino cash that way. Thanks

Thanks Taking cash in the casino will cost you 3% & all you'll get is money. There's no additional benefit. Using the ATM won't cost anything so using the ATM wins. The only thing that might affect you is if you wanted to exceed any daily withdrawal limits your bank may have.
Sizzlechest Posted January 10, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 10, 2016 There is another option. Call NCL's casino department about a month in advance and let them know you want to bring a certified check for casino play. You will be making it out to YOURSELF and signing it over to NCL when the casino opens. The casino then acts as your bank. You can withdraw money any time you like and there's no fee to do this. I tried it last time and it was pretty nice not to have to keep cash in the room safe or my pockets. It's a bit of a chore for you and the staff every time you want to put cash back into or out of your account. If you plan on bringing a lot of money, it's probably a good idea. Lol, next time, I leave in 2 days. I just don't want to pay the cash advance interest rate on my CC that has 0% for purchases. As someone mentioned if I use the ATM, it is actually a cash advance, and the interest charged on that is highway robbery
lujaha Posted January 10, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 10, 2016 Sorry, this is a slight variation on this thread, but can I use the onboard credit I am getting as part of my booking in the casino? I fear the answer will be no, but can't seem to find any clarification anywhere of this. Thanks and happy cruising to everyone. Two weeks today and we will be off! Froggitt Posted January 10, 2016 #12 Share Posted January 10, 2016 I have seen this done OK......its cashing out OBC for a 3% charge (chips, wait 10 mins, cash).

I fear the answer will be no, but can't seem to find any clarification anywhere of this. Thanks and happy cruising to everyone. Two weeks today and we will be off! Yes, you can. But they will charge you 3% of the amount that you do it for. In my case on the Getaway a couple weeks ago, I had $40 in non-refundable OBC that I didn't want to spend on anything. I went to the casino and they gave me a slip of paper that instructed me how to do it using any slot machine. Basically, using the touch screen on the slot machine, you move cabin OBC (it actually just charges your account -- so you could do this as a way of advancing yourself cash from your credit card too) on to your room key card for gambling purposes. It also adds the 3% charge. So in my case it added a $40 "charge" to my account and a second $1.20 charge to my account. Then you can gamble with it or if you want the cash you can then "cash out" the amount from the key card/slot machine to a paper bar coded receipt. Then take the receipt to the machines that give you cash from the receipt. As said above, you can probably do this from other games as well if you aren't a slot player. Just ask when you get there. Wavesprite Posted January 10, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 10, 2016 Wait, now I'm confused! If we use our on board account for anything in the casino they charge an additional 3%? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
bbryan5 Posted January 10, 2016 #15 Share Posted January 10, 2016 This has come up here before.. definitely NOT a cash advance. Just a "purchase" on your on board account. I believe it's a 3% fee

earlbird Posted January 10, 2016 #17 Share Posted January 10, 2016 I have always brought Travelers Checks in the past to use in the casino. I assume that this is still acceptable? It eliminates bringing cash and the 3% fee.

The ATM is most certainly NOT free...in fact it's more expensive the land-based ATMs (to pay for the satellite usage). OTOH using your credit card securing your room may result in accumulation of reward points. If I spend $10k in the casino, I get 15,000 mileage points...enough for a free short-haul trip....or approx $300 - $500 in value. To me, that's a benefit. . CalLuvsCrusingToo Posted January 11, 2016 #21 Share Posted January 11, 2016 Credit card in the ATM is certainly a different animal than using your Bank ATM card. I would Not use my CC in ship Atm. I was referring to my BANK Atm card. I do indeed get those fees ($5.50-ish) reimbursed, when using ships Atm. In the past I use ship Atm as my budget for casino. But hearing about the Cabin idea? Seems like that could be advantageous as well, with receiving CC mileage points etc. Informational thread. Thanks

Also, the $5.50 ish is per transaction, isn't there a $500 limit per transaction? I'm curious about this, because I'd like the advantage too! :) Stephen . sjbdtz Posted January 11, 2016 #24 Share Posted January 11, 2016 https://www.bankofinternet.com/personal-banking/checking/rewards-checking Thanks Sizzle, but according to the small print, this wouldn't apply. "Membership to the largest ATM network in the nation - You can use any domestic ATM and we'll automatically refund fees 1" "1 Go to any ATM and we'll automatically refund fees charged by other banks (excludes international ATM transactions)" Since the ATM on NCL isn't run by a bank, and the fees aren't charged by a bank....I'm surprised that this bank would refund those fees. . VideoTech Posted January 11, 2016 #25 Share Posted January 11, 2016 Re: ATM withdrawal limit - that is usually set by your bank for your account and you can request a limit higher than $500. However, I have run into ATM's on ships that limit you to $500 per withdrawal no matter your bank ATM limit. That's really interesting.... what bank refunds a private company's ATM fees?
