billrco90278 Posted January 11, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 11, 2016 We are considering the Minatur Wunderland as part of our Hamburg day on an upcoming cruise. Can somebody tell me where is it in relation to the cruise terminal? Is it walkable or do we take public transit? Does the HoHo bus stop there? Are advance tickets a requirement? Thanks for your help!
Desdichado62 Posted January 11, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 11, 2016 I read on the Min Wund website that they recommend advanced tickets due to long queues or so which meant that if you just show up, you could be in for a long wait. There are main terminals in Hamburg and where you berth depends on which ship you are on: http://www.hafen-hamburg.de/en/terminals#cruise http://www.hafen-hamburg.de/en/vessels/cruise-saillinglist Hamburg cruise city HafenCity: https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Gro%C3%9Fer+Grasbrook+19,+20457+Hamburg,+Tyskland/Miniatur+Wunderland,+Kehrwieder,+Hamburg,+Tyskland/@53.5416523,9.9881634,16z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x47b18f018e884dd9:0xc26b638ffc9bba12!2m2!1d9.996607!2d53.538847!1m5!1m1!1s0x47b18f046c70d7e1:0xa74ecf412ecd18ba!2m2!1d9.9885157!2d53.5437292!3e2 Hamburg Cruise Center Altona: https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Hamburg+Cruise+Center+Altona,+Van-der-Smissen-Stra%C3%9Fe+5,+22767+Hamburg,+Tyskland/Miniatur+Wunderland,+Kehrwieder,+Hamburg,+Tyskland/@53.5452509,9.9541121,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x47b18f7fd43be5b9:0xcee00112e56760d0!2m2!1d9.9372181!2d53.5435964!1m5!1m1!1s0x47b18f046c70d7e1:0xa74ecf412ecd18ba!2m2!1d9.9885157!2d53.5437292!3e2 Hamburg Cruise Center Steinwerder: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Hamburg+Cruise+Center+Steinwerder,+Buchheisterstra%C3%9Fe+16,+20457+Hamburg/Miniatur+Wunderland,+Kehrwieder,+Hamburg,+Tyskland/@53.5363415,9.9568595,14z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x47b18f9814ce9a9d:0x9b28db6d744b96bf!2m2!1d9.9603356!2d53.5296218!1m5!1m1!1s0x47b18f046c70d7e1:0xa74ecf412ecd18ba!2m2!1d9.9885157!2d53.5437292!3e2

I don't but I googled it and it seems your ship is expected to berth at Altona. http://www.hamburgcruisecenter.eu/en/estimated-ships Marina 20. June 2016 - 7:00 20. You are a wonderful resource. I learned something from you and will start googling other ports for such information. Is the walk for Altona to Miniatur Wunderland pleasant, scenic, and safe? Is there a tram or U-Bahn station near Altona we can use?

Capt_BJ Posted January 13, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Google Earth is your friend I just looked at Hamburg and both the Altona pier and Min' W'land are easy to find. If your ship does berth at Altona you'll be about 2 miles from MW'. The is a bus route and a water taxi route that can get you there if you don't want to walk. The nearest "U" station will leave you about 1/3 of a mile away; the bus just a couple of blocks. We visited this June past and walked from the U and then walked all the way to Altona after ... but we walk a lot. The HoHo bus does stop nearby. btw, taxi are readily available and reasonably priced too. We walked all over Hamburg day and night and never felt unsafe. Altona to MW is mostly right along the main river front tourist area ... very populated and very safe IMO. We got there pretty early, within an hour of opening, and still had to wait about 40 minutes b4 we got in without advanced purchase ... if going again I WOULD advance purchase. Note, we planned to spend an hour or two and spent nearly FIVE and could have stayed longer ... there IS that much to see. Mrs enjoyed it as much as I did and she is NOT a model train fan . . . the airport is AMAZING. I would say that this was at the top of our list of 'worth it' in Hamburg. We spent a few days in Hamburg at the end of our river cruise, Budapest to Nuremberg, b4 coming home on QM2, Hamburg to NYC Edited January 13, 2016 by Capt_BJ
