Available Sled Dog Tours without Sled Riding?

Hello all, I'm looking at an Inner Passage week long cruise in late May (probably Princess/Norwegian/Holland America) and trying to narrow down excursion choices. Nearly every line offers helicopter/dog sled rides, but that's more expensive and complex than I really want.

Are there sled dog camps that let you interact with the dogs/puppies in or near any of the ports? I don't even need to ride in a sled or cart, just a dog lover and interested in hearing about their training and work.

Any recommendations or tips?

There is one in Skagway called Sled Dogs, Gold Panning and 40 Below where they give a demo/show equipment and you can hold the puppies. See around pages 36-38 of the review below for more details and photos.

we did this one and really really enjoyed it!!

we originally weren't planning on doing this one, but my 88 year old mom suddenly complained that we hadn't taken her gold panning, so we signed up for this one and it was great.

we all enjoyed it.

you don't ride at all. You meet the dogs. See some of them in action, pulling the owner around. And you get to meet and hold the puppies.

and you also do the panning thing, which we all enjoyed as well (i was surprised that i enjoyed that part of it too)

all in all, a very well run operation and very entertaining - they had actors dressed up in period costume for the gold panning and 40 below part of it.

in addition to the one in skagway (that i reviewed in the post just above this one) there is also an excellent sled dog tour in seward if you're going to be in seward.

It's called seevey's ididaride (just outside of seward).

in this one you actually get pulled by the dogs (you sit in a cart on wheels)..

it was a lot of fun. it takes you through beautiful scenery.

And you meet the dogs, hold the puppies, etc.

Plus they tell you all about the ididarod, etc.

very well done. But that's if you're going to be in seward.

If not, then definitely do the one in skagway (Sled Dogs, Gold Panning and 40 Below). Well worth the money (it wasn't very expensive as i recall).

everyone in our group enjoyed both of the above. There were 4 of us: 27, 30, 59 and 88 years old

Holland America has a tour out of Skagway that includes a bus ride to the Yukon Territory, stop at Caribou Crossing for lunch and dog petting, and a train ride back to Skagway.

Here is what you will see at Caribou Crossing and the dogs waiting to be petted:

Here is what you will see on the train ride in both May and September:

This tour can be superior with going independent with a smaller group.
