Aftaernoon tea fashions

I have a question to ask in that on all of my cruises I have yet to go to the afternoon tea. I was wondering what is the correct fashion to wear. Is it smart casual, long pants and a nice top, or shorts(although I would feel strange doing that in the dining room). Just want to have some ideas because on my next Princess cruise I am going to the afternoon tea at least once.

We were invited to a tea on the Mercury a few years back. It was very strange -- ties and jackets were required. I wore a dress and heels. It was something I probably had packed for one of the in-between formal and casual nights.

There were only a few couples in attendance with a string quartet and tea goodies. There were waiters serving. It was so strange, because no one really knew what was going on; everybody seemed uncomfortable -- almost like William Powell was going to expose the murderer in a Thin Man movie! We expected the cruise director or social hostess or someone to speak to us, but nobody did.

I know this isn't the kind of tea that the ship has every day. On Royal Caribbean, it is held in the buffet and they serve light fare. It is a good place to get my mid-day snack.

Your question just brought back all kinds of memories of that weird afternoon on the Mercury!

Hi:) I think there are more than just one type of "Elegant Teas". I have been

to more than one, that is why I prefaced my comment that way.

On Celebrity I have been to the 4:00 High Tea in the dining room. And in my

case, they did request no shorts. I don't believe the men were required to

wear jackets. Most men were in a sport short (with a collar...golf shirt) and

slacks.

I wore a chico's outfit......2 piece top and slacks and felt fine. The waiters

were dressed to the 9s though.....with white gloves.

Then I was invited to another TEA....actually invitations were sent out.

(The one in the dining room is open to anyone).

The invitation was nice. I can't remember what the dress code was...but

I worn a cropped pants suit. And everyone else looked quite nice too.

I guess it depends on the ship. Both times I sailed Celebrity and I brought

enough outfits to wear a "casually nice one" for these teas.
