Passports

I just read this article and want to pass it on to as many as possible. My passport is good til 2020.

NYTimes Officials are expecting a flood of renewals of 10-year passports issued in 2006 and 2007. The latter was the year when the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative went into effect, for the first time requiring passports for Americans returning by air from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda. As millions of citizens scrambled to apply for their first passports, backlogs swelled and many were stranded.

Valid point, though hopefully staggered renewals due to vacations to places which require 3/6 month validity will help spread the load a bit. I'd expect the problem to actually get worse approaching June 2019, the 10-year mark from when WHTI was expanded to land & sea entry.

There were tons of stories in US and Canadian press about the impacts in Detroit/Windsor, Niagara, and other popular crossing points. Lots of folks turned away at the border, casino trade decimated etc etc etc. A lot of folks don't fly for vacations but do drive over the border.
