Flam railway

Yes it is cheaper however it can be a bit of a pain to get tickets. Don't wait until the day of your stop as you may encounter long lines plus the ship sometimes buys out almost the whole train for certain runs. You might post this on the Port of Call /Baltic forum as well.

Kirk is correct - best to book ahead if you can. Depending on the pressure on the port the trains can be heavily booked by cruise ships etc . We got off early when we went and couldn't get a ticket until a train sometime after 1.00pm . That was ok as we just went up and back down (there's not much at Myrdal - it's the journey which is the attraction) but because of our sailing time if we hadn't got that train we wouldn't hae had time to get the next one.

You didn't used to be able to book for less than 10 in advance but believe that is now possible. You might find these links helpful.

I would suggest you sit on the right hand side of the carriage facing the way you're going on the up journey, left on the way down as the train mainly hugs the left hand side of the valley going up so the views are more open on the other side.

Lots of posts regarding this question and suppose it comes down to personal choice, but we did the organised trip and it was great - coach in the morning to Voss for lunch, via lots of sights waterfalls etc then main line train Voss to Myrdal to pick up the Flam railway back to village - just a magnificent days outing. Well worth every penny.

That's a good way to do the train. I found the return journey DOWN to Flam much more exciting than the UP journey when we did the round trip on the train :)
