I need a walkthrough Villefranche to Monte Carlo and back.

Can someone please give me a very through walk-through on how I get from the cruise ship in Villefranche to Monte Carlo via train and back again. Would like to see the changing of the guard then head to the marina to look at the yachts and fancy cars around the casino area then head back.

I just visited by car Villefranche and Monte Carlo a couple of days ago but used the train in 2008. It was $5eu each for a return trip back then. Return tickets are cheaper, I think.

 

When you get off at the tender pier in Villefranche, head "right" along the seawall for about 100+ yards. At the end of the rows of buildings past all the restaurants and shops (to your left) you will notice a stone wall with a sign that reads "SNCF station". Take the steps up to the small station.

 

I think the ride is about 20 minutes to Monte Carlo. MC has the cleanest train station so it will definately stand out from the others.

 

When you exit the station at MC it will be about a 20 minute walk to the Palace and you will see lots of exotic cars along the way. Watch for doggie poop as they don't pick-up after their pets. You will see yachts at the base of the palace. Use google maps (walking) to show you the way. We have never made it to the casino as they have strict dress codes and we want to see the inside.

 

There are elevators built into the cliffs but we never took any and just walked.

You can also take a local bus from near the Monte Carlo train station to near the Palace. Here's the local bus info (note: different from the regional bus service): http://www.cam.mc/informations-pratiques.php?lang=en

 

You can buy a day ticket for the bus service that also includes the water boats. Some like to take them from the harbor to near the casino.

Would that be 06230 Villefranche-sur-Mer on Google maps? How do you know which train is going to Monte Carlo? Any train heading east?

See that tunnel along the wall above the black sailboat on the left? That the train tunnel.

 

Follow that wall towards the center of the pic and you'll see a single story building. (near that patch of purple) That's the area where the train station is and it really isn't far.

 

You will ask for a return ticket to Monaco/Monte Carlo and the train should be travelling from left to right on the tracks. The train may be marked "Ventmiglia" Italy which is it's last stop.

 

The stops from Villefranche are Beaulieu-sur-mer, Eze, Cap-d'Ail, then Monte Carlo.

 

NOTE: Those going to Eze must realize the Eze stop is by the sea and not Eze Village up the hill.

 

Departure times from Villefranche are 9:07, 9:28, 9:57, 10:12 & 10:39

though the 9:28 & 9:57 will not stop at Eze or Cap-d'Ail. Pick up the schedule to plan your return trip. (I brought one home)

You will have to climb a few stairs to the tracks. This is a very easy trip to

do. The bus, just outside the train station, down is easy to catch. There is an information booth at the station. They will tell you where to catch to bus, to the main tourist site, like the palace. There is a great chocolate place near the bus stop there, very high quality chocolates. One has to walk several blocks to the palace, or cathedral or the aquarium, very small blocks and easily done. Taking the bus in the other direction will take you by the casino.

When I buy a ticket is it for a specific time or can I get on any train? What would the train heading back from Monte Carlo to Villefranche be marked? I'm concerned with the language thing. My son took French in school till grade 9 but don't know how much help that will be:) Do I need to be on the station side of the tracks or the ocean side of the tracks?

You can ask for help at the bus stops or the train station...they speak English much better than we speak French,and if one person can' help you another will step in. I can see by your responses and questions you are worried about this...so do not worry you will be fine.This goes for most if not all the places you will be going.
