Moorea, taxi vs rental car

We will be in Moorea on April 12 on the Marina and we want to visit the Lagoonarium. Lagoonarium does not offer transfer from cruise ship dock. Cannot locate a taxi who will take advance booking on a cruise ship day. Avis has offered a rental car for 8720 xpf, payment in advance by credit card.

I have no idea what a taxi would cost.

Any advice? Anyone done this either with taxi or rental car?

Thank you very much!

Terri

We'd rent a car.

If it's waiting for you at the tender dock, you'll be on your way in no time. Then you can continue your way around the island and see all of it after you're finshed at the Lagoonarium....not difficult as there is only the ring road. Be sure to take in the Belvedere where you can see both Cook's and Opunohu Bays....gorgeous. The ship will be anchored in one of them. The road to the Belvedere is a little winding but easy to drive. If you have time/interest, stop at the Agricultural College on the way up. They have interesting local jams and honey and the $$ goes to the college.

ps/ 8720 xpf is a decent rate for FP, especially on cruise day.

Should have added: And be sure to pre-book the car as there are only a limited number of rental cars on the island.

Have a wonderful time!

Thanks so much for your help. We are going ahead with pre-booking the car. And thanks for the tips on seeing the Belvedere and Ag college as well. That will appeal to DH as he used to be a farmer.

Here is a link to what I achieved in Moorea with a 'Europcar' hire on the island...

The joy with both Avis and EuRopcar is that they will collect you and return you to the point of the tender landing.

Hope that helps.

Moorea has to be one of the most scenic sailaways in the world...

Thank you all for your input. Just now we received a secure link from Avis and booked and confirmed our vehicle for Moorea. They will pick us up at the cruise ship dock. All done! So exciting, our trip is only 3 weeks away now.

Thanks again!

You are most welcome! You're going to love visiting and cruising French Polynesia.

Noteworthy re viewing from onboard:

-shooting the pass when arriving/departing Rangiroa....amazes us how the ship sails effortlessly through that pass....and usually accompanied by pods of dolphins.

-the breathtaking view of Bora Bora's Mt Otemanu. The island itself is no great shakes but the lagoon is spectacular.

And then EASTER ISLAND!

WOW, you are in for a wonderful time! Enjoy!!
