Downtown Miami, question for locals..

This coming cruise we will be staying at the JW Marriott, last cruise we stayed there as well, but we were put there after an oversell at another hotel and didn't get to really enjoy walking around due to a horrible knee injury on my part.

This is our 4th time to Miami and I don't have any problem walking around and exploring. I do not want to go to bayside as that is not a true representation of the city. Is it safe to walk in the area around the hotel all the way to flagler and back? I saw all the shops on the map including a Macys. I think it would be nice to head that way and just explore and shop if you say its relatively safe. (background we are used to walking in chicago and are aware of our surroundings).

Are there any restaurants around that area that stand out as a must not miss?

15th & Vine on the 15th floor of the Viceroy Hotel and Area 31 on the 16th floor of the Epic Hotel for the atmosphere and views. The views at both are off the charts of downtown and Biscayne Bay.

I would not feel comfortable walking West of I95. Some of those areas can get really bad. Walking along Brickell at night is very safe.

Downtown is very different than it was ten years ago.

I am not a local but spend time each year in Miami and I agree with what BlueHerons has said.

Another place that we like to walk over to is the small island where the Mandarin Oriental is located. We get there off Brickell and just walk over the bridge. It's fun to walk around there.

From the Island you can get some views of ships in port.
