You can certainly do Santorini on your own. Take the cable car up to the town and just wander around. We took a bus ride also. Please don't ride up on the donkeys, they are ill cared for and thirsty :-(

Have you checked this site for ideas? Here is the info on Athens http://www.cruisecritic.co.uk/ports/newport.cfm?ID=110

Use the Ports of Call section on this forum to research. It's a brilliant resource with hundreds of posts from people who have planned their days diy. Use the search button to narrow down to a specific place if needed.

I find the Ports of Call section here really fantastic. Brilliant resource and all written by cruisers who've been there, done it

We hired a car for the day in Santorini which allowed us to see all of the island. Mykonos is another Greek beach resort, I think there's a resort called St John's (check cc threads) where you can hire a sun bed and use their facilities for the day.

I think it is the best way to research the ports of call. I have used it for years and it has saved us hundreds, if not thousands of pounds. We have sometimes used it to select a local tour guide and sometimes gone completely diy using public transport. Both have been successful and in over 10 years of cruising we have never had a problem doing shore excursions this way. Good luck!
