Tip jars?

We just got back from a cruise on the Fantasy and the musical entertainers all had tip jars out.

This was cruise #16 with Carnival for us and we have never seen this before.

Is this something new?

20 cruises on CCL and the only tip jar Ive ever seen was in the piano bar.

I've seen a tip jar in the piano bar but not elsewhere. Sometimes the musicians will try hawking their "CD" or "EP" offering.

 

I haven't seen a tip jar for musicians in the atrium, pool, or casino areas, but then I've never looked closely.

They are paid well, need no tips.

Only tip the piano player. BTW the entertainment staff gets tip money from us in the auto tips.

We have been to the Piano Bar where the player was somewhat obnoxious because he wasn't getting many tips. It felt like you couldn't even sit in there and listen for free..... Never saw other musicians requesting tips.

Tip jars are easy to ignore. Like any other situation, tip if you want to. If not, then don't. I've seen tip jars in certain fast food restaurants and coffee shops. I ignore those too.

That's odd. Especially when Carnival is telling you they are now taking tips from you to cover entertainment.

Entertainment are skilled professionals paid for their talent. While tips in a piano bar for requests are customary it would be tacky for other entertainers to solicit tips on a cruise ship and they have never been in the traditionally suggested tipping amounts. I am amazed slightly that some don't understand this. It would be like tipping the CD or Hotel Director or Captain.

We always tip the piano player if we make a request. In some dueling piano bars money is how you make a request.
