Elua Posted May 11, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2016 Aloha Kakou, This is Dave, from Elua. We are currently in Japan on the Diamond Princess, and I thought I might pass on a quick tip to those who will be traveling to Japan this season. Internet is always a commodity when traveling, and Leialoha and I, (as many people do) count on Starbucks much of the time for that internet. Please know, that in Japan, you need to either sign up for their internet BEFORE you get in country, or have your phone able to receive SMS messages in Japan to obtain a code for activation. There is a website, (search Google for Starbucks Japan, internet) that will walk you through it. I can't count the number of times of the last three years that guests have come up to us in a Starbucks in Japan and asked how to get internet, only to be told that they have to be able to receive messages or they had to activate it before arriving. I hope this makes your traveling a little easier if you are fortunate enough to make it to Japan. Aloha No, Tiki Dave (of Elua) http://www.facebook.com/eluamusic Ps: Taiwan has the same procedure

sawtooth Posted May 11, 2016 #6 Share Posted May 11, 2016 Yes, we encountered that problem when in Japan this month after the Diamond cruise. Wish we had known the procedure beforehand. It was very annoying not to be able to connect.
ggprincess2004 Posted May 11, 2016 #7 Share Posted May 11, 2016 Thanks so much Dave. We are planning to be on the Diamond in Oct/Nov 2017 and this will be so helpful. I am sure you don't have a schedule that far in advance, but we will hope to see both you and your wife on board. Ginger
naxos Posted May 11, 2016 #8 Share Posted May 11, 2016 Did you arrange for a portable wifi device for use in Japan? And has it been able to receive a land based cell signal while onboard?

Rare Kellyansapansa Posted May 14, 2016 #12 Share Posted May 14, 2016 Thanks for the tip. We visited Japan a couple of years ago and took our mobile phones with us but purchased international data SIM cards at home before leaving. We could then top them up online whenever we needed to. Tara Jane Posted May 14, 2016 #13 Share Posted May 14, 2016 My mobile a Lumia (old Nokia type) worked fine in Japan last July/August although we only used it for wifi in hotels and sms both within Japan and home to Australia. Hubby's very old Nokia worked for sms in some areas but not others. Thanks for the info re starbucks. I hopefully signed up last night, although I wont be travelling until late August.
