kunash Posted May 25, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 25, 2016 Hello I have never been to this port before. Is there anything to do where the ship docks? Can we walk to town or to nearby bar areas ( like St Marteen ) Looking at the excursions, I quite like SAN JUAN BEACH WITH LUNCH, which stops at the Caribe Hilton. Has anyone been on this excursion please? Need something relaxing with the family
champagne123 Posted May 25, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 25, 2016 Yes, many people stay in port. You can walk up and down all of the cobble stone streets where there are many markets, stores and eateries. (you can't get lost). If you would like to do an excursion, may I suggest you go to the PORT OF CALLS/Caribbean section to read the reviews and ideas. :):):)
DonnaK Posted May 25, 2016 #3 Share Posted May 25, 2016 This is a great port for just walking around! The ship docks in Old San Juan, and there are plenty of shops, bars, historical sites, forts, etc, within walking distance. There is no need to take an excursion unless you want to visit the beach or the rainforest.
wants2cruise2 Posted May 25, 2016 #4 Share Posted May 25, 2016 I agree with previous posters, a nice easy port to walk around, if you are making a port of call stop there. If it is your embarking port then no, you use a different port and there is nothing walking distance to it. I have stayed at the Crib Hilton post cruise and they have a wonderful beach and pool complex so any excursion there will be a nice day.
cruiseguy1016 Posted May 25, 2016 #5 Share Posted May 25, 2016 A great way to see Old San Juan is on a Segway. We have used Segway Tours of Puerto Rico a couple of times. Their guides are very friendly and knowledgeable. After the tour you'll still have plenty of time to walk around, shop, eat etc.
Clarea Posted May 25, 2016 #6 Share Posted May 25, 2016 (edited) We've enjoyed touring the forts, both of which we walked to from the port. Here is the port of call forum: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=131 Edited May 25, 2016 by clarea
starfish216 Posted May 25, 2016 #7 Share Posted May 25, 2016 It's a great port for walking around if a beach day doesn't work. You can either walk or take the free shuttle to El Morro and Castillo San Cristobal - both are forts. A $5 fee covers entrance to both forts. Last week we walked along the waters edge from the ship to El Morro, then took the shuttle bus from there to Castillo San Cristobal then walked through the cobblestone streets past the shops back to the ship. Walking to either place is slightly uphill but coming back is down hill. The walk to each place is about 20-30 minutes depending on how fast or slow you walk. Rare DragonOfTheSeas Posted May 25, 2016 #9 Share Posted May 25, 2016 We visited San Juan on May 1st. We have been there several times and enjoy San Juan. it is an easy to walk port and the night time sail away was stunning! You can visit the forts, go to the beach [isla Verde area is my favorite] visit a rain forest, visit the Bacardi factory or just walk around. enjoy!! The economic problems PR is having were evident when we were there. As we exited the ship we were met with a parade and demonstration that was anti- american, anti-government. Also, there were quite a few store fronts that were empty. The Sheraton across from the dock closed the casino. [on a positive note they are putting a Walgreens there] Our DGS loves Hard Rock Cafe. [we were going to get him a shirt] We remembered there was one in San Juan. but, the lady at the tourist info center said it recently closed. I hope things turn around for them soon. PNW Traveler Posted May 25, 2016 #10 Share Posted May 25, 2016 The forts are part of the U.S. National Parks/National Historic Site system. If you have the senior parks pass admission is free. We have enjoyed informal tours with park staff.
Rare BillOh Posted May 25, 2016 #11 Share Posted May 25, 2016 A great way to see Old San Juan is on a Segway. We have used Segway Tours of Puerto Rico a couple of times. Their guides are very friendly and knowledgeable. After the tour you'll still have plenty of time to walk around, shop, eat etc. I have done this in Nassu, I will keep this in mind if we ever port in Nassau again thanks! My next two cruises depart from there, but perhaps if we get in early, I will give it a try.
