First and Ten Posted July 6, 2016 Author #227 Share Posted July 6, 2016 (edited) Answering 'just a little bit' when asked if you smoke is like answering 'only red heads' when asked if you have ever beat a woman. Either you smoke or you do not smoke. I trust that since you have 'patients' that you clearly explain that to them. :D:D:D:D props to the analogy!!!! NHL Philly Fan Posted July 6, 2016 #228 Share Posted July 6, 2016 I think something to consider is that while on vacation some people may smoke when in "real life" they may not. Kind of like when people are on vacation they tend to drink more THAN when at home. So I think the 20% may be a little higher when on vacation. Just a thought... I seriously doubt very many people pick up a habit as nasty and as deadly as smoking based on whether they are on vacation or not. Surely not enough to bring the percent up to 20% from 15%. Schoifmom Posted July 6, 2016 #229 Share Posted July 6, 2016 Perhaps Carnival would be doing everyone a service by making a lounge like that so that there is an alternate place for them to go if they didn't want to go outside for whatever reason. Carnival used to have the cigar bars. DH loved them because he smokes a pipe. Now, if you smoke a cigar or a pipe, you have to go outside. Unfortunately, on most ships you had to walk through the cigar bar to get to another venue (on Fantasy class, it was the comedy club). That is why so many people complained and they were taken away. Perhaps if Carnival could convert one of the club spaces that is rarely used and out of the main traffic path to a well-ventilated smoking area, that would make EVERYONE happy. elliair Posted July 6, 2016 #230 Share Posted July 6, 2016 Just curious, do they actually allow smoking cigars in the Churchill Lounge? It was called, at one time, Winston's Cigar Lounge. Now its called Winston's Bar. The Princess ships I have been on were all called Churchill Lounge (not Winston), and you can smoke cigars in there. I happened to be walking by the lounge one day and there were men in there smoking big cigars and the lounge was filled with smoke. The bad part of where the lounge is located, it was directly above the atrium and whenever anyone opened the door to the lounge the smoke drifted out into the walking area and down into the main level of the atrium. They added an International Cafe in dry dock and put it directly to the entrance of the casino! They should have taken out the Churchill Lounge and relocated it to the casino where the IC is now and put the IC where the Churchill Lounge is. But,they didn't consulate me first!~ :D

Sugaree5335 Posted July 6, 2016 #232 Share Posted July 6, 2016 ***??? People who do not smoke do not become smokers when on vacation. I have had patients answer the question do you smoke with the answer just a little bit and typically that means they smoke only a little bit because they can't afford more cigarettes or because they do not have enough time to go outside often enough to smoke more at their place of work. Non-smokers do not have any desire to smoke whether on vacation or not! Meh. I quit smoking four years ago. Very occasionally, I'll have a cigarette when I'm drinking. If I'm going to be drinking more on vacation then it goes to reason that I'll smoke a few cigarettes. But I don't smoke in real life anymore. cruzin Phillis Posted July 6, 2016 #234 Share Posted July 6, 2016 How about liquor, that causes liver damage. No one forces you to be amongst smoke. You can not smell a trail of liquor.
cruzin Phillis Posted July 6, 2016 #235 Share Posted July 6, 2016 With all due respect, second hand smoke is very different. No one can get liver damage from someone else who is drinking to excess, but anyone who is bothered by second hand smoke is out of luck. Just walking in the hallway outside of the casino can be hard for anyone who is very sensitive to smoke. Perhaps smokers don't realize that. Totally disagree with you. I work with patients at a cancer hospital that got cancer from second hand smoke.
cruzin Phillis Posted July 6, 2016 #236 Share Posted July 6, 2016 Then problem becomes and for some reason most smokers refuse to say this. Smoking in public places effects the rights of all who wish to use that place. And since it wouldn't be fair take anyone's right to use a place. Then yes ban smoking cause not being able to smoke dosn't take away you right to be somewhere. I agree. I would like to donate more to the casino but I can stay pass one hour in there without getting a headache from the smell. Some just use the casino to smoke and do not gamble at all. cruzin Phillis Posted July 6, 2016 #237 Share Posted July 6, 2016 I just thought going on a cruise was suppose to be a vacation. Not who dresses to the 9s or who likes to wear shorts in the MDR. Who smokes or doesn't smoke. Who can or can't ride the elevator. Life it too short to worry about what other people do and think. Maybe some reconsideration is in order. It suppose to be a vacation not who is better than the Jones. Its MY vacation and I will do what I see fit. I don't judge people for what they do. It is there choice what to do as it is my choice of what I want to do The op asked a simple question and the thread turned into a debate...off the soap box and dropped the mic... Please pick the mic back up because a vacation is a vacation until others become obtrusive. When I am not able to enjoy the vacation I want to enjoy because I do not want to smell like smoke, then there is a problem. I do not care if you smoke, wear shorts, what ever but it does become an issue when it affects more than just you and your party.
DnD_Cruisin Posted July 6, 2016 #238 Share Posted July 6, 2016 Totally disagree with you. I work with patients at a cancer hospital that got cancer from second hand smoke. I agree that second hand smoke can be a cause for cancer but I wasn't aware that there was a test to determine the exact cause of a cancer. What is that test called? I have a friend with throat cancer that has sadly spread to her brain. She has never smoked but surmised 2nd hand smoke was the cause. Her dr told her there was no way to know for sure. I'd love to be able to provide her with the test that could confirm the pathology. Because she is concerned that if not 2nd hand smoke..the cause could be hereditary. She wants her sons to be mindfull. Thanks in advance for your reply.
cajunfla Posted July 6, 2016 #239 Share Posted July 6, 2016 No shorts in MDR? I would never sail Carnival again. I own one pair of long pants, and they are reserved for weddings and funerals. Being retired, I wear shorts 24/7/365.
lyannea Posted July 6, 2016 #240 Share Posted July 6, 2016 No sales pitch while getting a spa service (explanation point ) You can have the waiting room filled with all the products just like in a salon. They can be beautifully displayed. They can be available for all other cruisers who want to buy a product. They can have sale days/times where you can get a discount on all products. As you hand over the agreement before the treatment to the spa personnel, they can tell you that all products used during the treatment are available after and throughout the cuise. Cinderellis Posted July 6, 2016 #241 Share Posted July 6, 2016 I'd ban smoking in all indoor spaces on the ship, but add back smoking allowed balconies on one side of the ship. I'd enforce the chair hog rule. A reasonable dress code would be nice as well. No butt checks or back hair. Take your hat off for dinner ( unless you're a chemo patient), and please....... take a shower between pool/beach/excursion and the MDR. I like your compromise!! I too am non-smoking and don't want to encounter it in the casino or my balcony. If only 20% are smokers, maybe have 1/4 of the ship to be smoking balconies in a specific section? I agree with the general dress code - in addition to butt cheeks or back hair, I would add butt crack and arm pit hair. Cargo or nice shorts don't bother me, because we are sitting down to dinner. Having to see someone's overt cleavage (jealous perhaps?:p) is not my favorite either. Chair holders/hogs are tougher to handle unless there is a time meter attached to the chair. I usually just move the towels after a certain amount of time (1 hour?).
ccruisequeen Posted July 6, 2016 #242 Share Posted July 6, 2016 Remember the Carnival Paradise? How did that non-smoking experiment turn out?Charge for the serenity deck, go to Princess, you can do that at the sanctuary. A pay for pool privileges and chairs scheme. I just like the NO KIDS at the serenity. Allow only 1 person in room to purchase Cheers package. My wife Can't drink due to medical reasons, or allow 2nd person to only buy soda and coffee package. Mix and match them. And best of all, allow for a second week at no charge for all those great people that don't break any rules and adhere 100% to their cruise contract. Aloha. They changed Cheers by adding more non alcoholic beverages (water, frozen drinks, coffee drinks, etc) As for non smoking, I think healthy living and lifestyles would be more accepting of non smoking cruises. Because she is concerned that if not 2nd hand smoke..the cause could be hereditary. She wants her sons to be mindfull. Thanks in advance for your reply. There may not be a test but anecdotal evidence strongly points to second hand smoke being a causal agent for many people with lung cancer. One case in point (and yes I'm well aware one case does not indicate a trend) is my own dear mother. A few years back she was diagnosed with emphysema and lung cancer. We were all incredulous and could not see how that could be true as my mother never smoked even one cigarette her entire life. When we asked her how in the world she got this she said she remembered growing up as a child, both her parents were HEAVY chain smokers. They had given up the habit by the time we grandkids were born so we never saw the cigarette smoking to make the correlation. She said her home growing up was always clouded with smoke and her first jobs, wthe offices were all smoke filled as back then you could smoke in office buildings. I'm guessing this is where the lung damage happened. My best friend growing up lived with 2 chain smoking parents. She always stunk and her skin, hair (she was very blond) and nails always seemed yellow to me. Her mother died when she was only 16 of lung cancer and my friend now has emphysema herself despite never having smoked. So I do believe that second hand smoke is dangerous. And yes your nasty habit does cause anyone around you to partake of your nasty habit. How would you smokers like to partake of my nasty habits? What if every time you came around me you had to eat the same candy bars, cookies or brownies I was eating. Even if you were full to the point of feeling sick, you still had to keep eating as long as I was??? That is how smoking feels to me. I don't care if you smoke as long as it's no where I have to walk through or around.

ccruisequeen Posted July 6, 2016 #245 Share Posted July 6, 2016 I would also like the return of the topless deck. I hate that I get tan lines when I lay out on the ship. I do miss the drink coupons. We used to buy a couple sheets of them and if we didn't use them that cruise, we saved them for the next one. There is no way I could come close to getting my money's worth with Cheers. I would like to see double points for solo cruisers. And bring back the Future Cruise Certificates. I'd like to see the end of the single supplement. ccruisequeen Posted July 6, 2016 #246 Share Posted July 6, 2016 Maybe they should have the traditional dining room observe the dress code, have tablecloths, and keep the dancing. Then have the YTD room be the more relaxed dress code, no tablecloths, and no dancing. That way you can choose which things are important to your dining experience and choose accordingly. I'm a your time diner, but I like the dress code, tablecloths, and no dancing. Don't punish me!! A CRUISE A YEAR KEEPS ME IN GEAR

A CRUISE A YEAR KEEPS ME IN GEAR Well I think it is a good compromise. You're not going to please everyone all the time, but it's a start. Just pick whichever dining experience best suits your needs and what is most important to you - open dining times, or the more traditional dining experience. nwcruiselover Posted July 6, 2016 #248 Share Posted July 6, 2016 (edited) I'd like to see double loyalty points for solos like RCL has. Also, reduction of the solo supplement to 150% on 1A cabins like Carnival used to have, and the addition of studio cabins (cabins designed for single occupancy). I echo the prior suggestion for the spa staff to stop the sales pitches during spa services. Because of that, I don't visit the spa anymore. PAPERBKWRITER Posted July 7, 2016 #249 Share Posted July 7, 2016 They never really had a non-smoking "side." I know what you mean but most people ignore the little sign BUT Splendor DID have 2 separate sides. When my friend wandered over to me in the non-smoking area she was politally told that smoking was permitted on the smoking side of the casino where the signs allowed it. Jayfo Posted July 7, 2016 #250 Share Posted July 7, 2016 LOVE the idea someone a few pages back said about the ones wanting to wear whatever they wanted to dinner would be in the YTD room and those of us wanting to dress it up a bit would be in the traditional dining room. No rules and anything goes in YTD. Have at it. Could market it as YTD vs "classic" dining. Hope someone from Carnival is listening here!!! If so....then yes, have all interior areas non smoking too :)
