Storing Luggage in Southhampton

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a place to store luggage in Southhampton? When we get off the boat we have an evening flight and thought we would explore the Titanic Musem or other places before taking the train to Heathrow.....

Thank you for your advice!

Here is a link to some left luggage places in Southampton: http://www.discoversouthampton.co.uk/visit/visitor-info/luggage-storage

I am sure that there is a hotel that will look after it too.

There is no direct train to Heathrow. Most people either take a private hire car, or save money by catching a National Express Coach. Look here for more information: http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx

For private hire, Smiths for Airports are well recommended on this forum: http://www.smithsforairports.com/index.html

On the luggage storage question, you should check with them directly before you go. Things can change and you don't want to trudge all the way to the Sealife centre for example, only to find that they don't do it anymore.

Do you have to book National Express before hand or can we just make our way to the station? I have everything lined up except my ride back from SouthHampton to London.

You can buy tickets from the driver of the coach, providing there is space.

Luggage storage in Southampton has been a bit of an issue since the Grand Harbour stopped offering the service for non-residents.

Oceans has had a short but chequered history. I phoned them yesterday, more to see if they were still trading than anything else, and yes they're open & charge £5 per checked bag & £3 per hand-luggage.

Can I suggest you check with SeaCity ( aka Titanic museum) - they do offer to store stuff while folk are at the museum, but that's really for day-trip stuff like backpacks with coats, drinks & snacks. Not sure they'd be so keen to baby-sit a cruiser's luggage. museums@southampton.gov.uk

There's luggage storage at Southampton airport. It's outside the city & you'd need to take a train, or a taxi ride (£16 to £20 e/w), which makes it expensive and time-consuming.

The airport is on the Southampton to Winchester & London rail line. You might want to consider dropping your bags at Southampton airport then hopping on an inexpensive train to historic Winchester, just 10 - 15 minutes away. Then return to the airport, collect your bags, and take the train for Heathrow.

But be aware - Heathrow isn't on a direct line from Southampton. You can buy a through "train ticket" to Heathrow from Southampton (or Southampton airport or Winchester), but the journey involves an included bus transfer to Heathrow from the nearest rail station - Woking or Reading depending on the train time. The total journey time of about 2 hours is the same as the National Express bus from Southampton direct to Heathrow, but at over £40 pp it's more than twice as expensive as the bus.

(the Nat Express bus doesn't go via Southampton airport)

There are usually seats available for walk-ups.

But I strongly advise you to pre-book - frequency is limited & if your chosen bus is full you probably won't make your flight by taking the next available bus.

JB :)
